    Which ONE plane?

I first got my LN LAJ it was horrible. Sharpened as much as I could, it just chattered and was generally awful. After each sharpening, it got better and better. Now, it does everything but the really rough stuff. Great smoother, shoots, end grain trimming, etc. However, the extra long toe...

    Rescued Record No5 1/2 Plane

yeah, it's sorry rubbish. duct tape handle, epoxy here, chipped sole there. No really, what I should have said was that it can take down a piece nearly as fast (because it's heavier and wider) and I can then spend less time flattening the board. Of course, by rough lumber, I mean a board that...

    Rescued Record No5 1/2 Plane

wow. I bought one new-in-box from the early 1950's that doesn't look as good as yours. I love my Record 5 1/2. It'll take down rough lumber quicker than a scrub. I don't worry about the wide mouth nor the flatness (although it's within 0.003", anyway). The weight just powers through the...

    3m micro abrasive paper

And the baby oil (mineral oil) takes the gooey residue off of the granite slab. Smells nice, too.

    Shrinking (i.e. drying) dowels in a micro-wave oven ?

Right, or if you put them in a oven, you should put them directly on the rack unless they are small, then you need to punch holes in some foil. The trick is to get as much moisture out as possible. If you use the microwave, as Paul said, I also use a piece of paper towel to help absorb the...

    Honing Guides

I have tried several and found the MKII is perfect until you get chisels less than 1/2" wide, then the Kell is perfect. You really have to concentrate on the edge, not the roller. I also have a Jet wet sharpener (Tormek clone). I'm sure it's nice, but I never use it. I like the oar for my...

    aristocrat chisels or not

Those look great. How do they sharpen? I've been looking for some here in the US. BTW, been seeing alot of socket chisels showing up on the Bay without handles... Mortise: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=330232262113

    Tool Price Inflation

Well, I agree they are not commodity items, but they are made from materials that are. I also think it's the European system that brings the prices of goods up to meet levels produced domestically. Maybe if we did that in the US, we wouldn't be so dependent on China. But, like my bank, if...

    Lie-Nielsen Bevel-edge Chisel Set of 5

There is a separate part number to order the set without the leather chisel tool roll (will save you $50). It's something I will never use because previous post here on the site have mentioned rusting on the chisels stored in the leather. The 1" chisel (not part of the set) was so sharp, it...

    LN No9...hot dog handle?

All LN tools have a small date stamp on the bottom of the box. Email LN and ask for the date of manufacture that the No. 9 included the hot dog so you can get your supplier to check stock. I went through the same thing with the adjustable mouth version of the low angle jointer (January 2006 or...

    Tool Price Inflation

Here in the US, I noticed the new catalog prices of Veritas have gone up. All tools here (except for LN who has kept the same prices for at least a year back) are about to jump so let's hope they aren't ripping you off just because your UK. Unfortunately, we are all about to get ours. Your...

    Philly's Toys...

Very nice :D indeed a very nice brass work... fillets and all. also very nice work on the slotted hex screws on the bottom. bravo. I was browsing your page and saw you sporting what looked like a Red Bull Coulthard hat. You planning on making a special edition F1 plane? (just joking).

So how do you grind yours????

hmmm... that's not too bad, Derek. You started me thinking...if I could adapt my oar by putting a wooden saddle in the bottom to hold the flat scrub blade... Thanks. Link to oar in case you're interested or have used one and wish to share thoughts...

So how do you grind yours????

Thanks! I'll give it a shot. The old Record 5 1/2 does an admirable job of taking down most timber, but I just bought a L-N scrub and anxious to use it on wide figured maple. Makes sense about the extremities of the camber.
