Caustic soda works well too, IIrc, it makes the liquid more conductive.

First attempt at hydrolysis rust removal

Depending on the mild steel / angle iron, it can have <0.5% copper, it might have been that you saw. A couple of things I'd suggest to anyone trying this is to ensure the anode is larger (in surface area) than the piece being cleaned! Do it outside! I've had a couple of 'cracks' from setups...

    Shed roof felt

+1 I did a shed roof seven years ago with a cold applied bitumen paint / adhesive stuff under the roofing felt with alloy tape on the joins, (all from wickes). Still watertight today with no signs of any of the normal wear and tear. I now think its a waste of time putting felt on a roof...

Kitchen knives advice follow-up and question

The style of knife is called Santoku, which translates as three uses or virtues (slicing, dicing and mincing) mainly meant for vegtables but obviously can be used for general work too. The Kullenschliff show its a western interpretation of the traditional Japanese design, only usually found on...

mystery object? Its a Sash Fillister. No, a plough. Thanks

Thanks for doing that Andy, most kind. There were various angles available on the example I have, depending on which part you examined! I settled for 25 as a start point and yes the tormek was happy enough, didn't take long at all despite the poor state of the previous grinds. I even...

mystery object? Its a Sash Fillister. No, a plough. Thanks

A further question about this, looking at various pics all the irons seem to have a flat edge to the blade. Any idea what sort of angle it should be before I try setting up the Tormek? 20 degrees sound right? This one has been butchered to an asymmetrical half round shape, looks like it was...

mystery object? Its a Sash Fillister. No, a plough. Thanks

thanks for that chaps! It's also missing another couple of parts from comparison to online pics. The iron and wooden wedge being the main ones. EDIT SWMBO and MIL went back to the shop and found the wedge, possibly the two locking wedges and a couple of irons that might or might not fit...

Thanks W2S, that lead mills website was most helpful, I'll let you know how it goes. No apology necessary about about registering I'd already bought the flashing. I got a very helpful PM too that I'll be incorporating into the fix! The lead flashing looks to run at about £150 for the size I...

    roof flashing problems.. (SORTED!)

The research and reading list for this has been extensive on the varying legislation involved! Its taken longer to research it than its taken to select, collect and fit the various components. :) Although, as it is not a 'house' where it is being installed, there appears to be a grey fog...
