thanks for the help, i think i will go with walnut. i did think about holly, as my wood is completly overgrown with it!. But then i saw some cedar sitting in the log shed and thought it would make the workshop smell a bit better!
i'm in the process of making a small chess set in the odd spare minute, i'm making the white pieces from cedar but need a darker wood for the other set. in the past, the wood of choice would have been something like ebony but i want to steer clear of endangered species. any ideas?
sort of off topic, but yew trees are poisonous to apples, is it therefore the case that items turned from yew are poisonous? eg to eat/drink off/out of

this one doesn't apear to have a hollow head and tail stock for log hole boring, is this essential for the holes in lamps, or can the same job be done with a chuck to hold the lamp and another chuck on the tailstock to hold the drill?
