    Butt Joints

Thanks for all the reply. I am going to look at the bolts option and also beef up the base by boxing it in. I'll purchase struts so I can lift and use it for under bed storage. It is a work in progress and a project so I am learning as I go along. I might have a go at tenons - seems a good idea...

    Butt Joints

Apart from the bed gymnastics, as I understand you then bracing the bottom should stop or limit top sway. I will be trying that out this weekend. Thanks

    Butt Joints

Hi I am trying to make a four poster bed and am keeping it simple by butt jointing 2 x 2 pine. However, in order to stop the bed from rocking I am having to add 45 pine strips in the corner. If I bought 8 x 1 pine boards and secured this to the top of the frame, would this stop the rocking...

    Drawers

No I haven't seen that - thanks. He uses Dovetails for the drawers. I am a bit concerned about doing them - I am still learning to sharpen hand tools! I suppose I have to dive in at some point. Thanks Rich

    Drawers

Hi I am learning as I go along but hope to shortly go to some one day or two day workshops. If anyone knows of any in the Cornwall area please let me know (or if anyone on the forum lives in Cornwall and fancies mentoring me - that would be amazing!) This morning I want to make a drawer. I have...

    Thickness Planer

Ok thanks for all the help. A good morning. I will be buying a hand held sander with the longest flat surface I can afford and avoiding hermes belts. Enjoy the rest of the day.

    Thickness Planer

I rarely tear any paper - thanks for the question it is a good thought. Currently I have a very good source of pallet wood and I like the idea of recycling. I understand the dislike - consider it practice for when I get to the point of being able to build something well! I think looking at...

    Thickness Planer

So rule out thickness planer then as I agree I don't want to break it and have costly resharpening. It seems the options are: 1. Costly drum sander 2. Buy a better sander and hand finish Any other thoughts please? Thanks Rich

    Thickness Planer

Just looking at the cost of drum sanders and they all look to be over £1000 which is well outside of my budget. But in looking I found belt sanders. I am currently using a Ryobi orbital sander so anything would be better. Thanks Rich

    Thickness Planer

Hi Thanks for the reply. I was aiming for smooth as possible. I do reckon on doing some sanding but at the moment I am sanding 3 levels of grit. I don't have a huge budget but the drum sander does seem to be the right option. Does it have similar problems with blade sharpening please? Thanks...

    Thickness Planer

Hi I am a hobbyist and I like to work with pallet wood. The major problem is all the sanding! I want to automate the job and I am wondering whether a thickness planer will do the work. I have never used one and so don't really know much about it. I understand that it makes them thinner but does...

Starting from scratch tool buying advice please

Ok so I have got a lot of good advice from this forum including the encouragement to use hand tools. So I am starting a project and have posted a new topic here for folks to comment on. https://www.ukworkshop.co.uk/forums/my-first-non-bodge-project-t96752.html Thanks for all the help. Rich
