I start off between centres located in what I assume to be the centre of the log on both sides (Pure guesswork really, but I do measure the center lengthways). I first turn the bottom leaving a spigot which I then hold in some gripper jaws on my axminster chuck when I reverse it. It's more...
Here is my latest green turning which I would like to share. I call them boat bowls because I can't really think of another name for them. The two are made from oak. Three views: From the top showing the inside. The bottom showing the outside and from the side showing the curvature. They...
I think I might just have to copy this one as well (if you are ok with that). I can think of at least 10 pieces wallowing in the shed that could do with some of the same treatment.
I used an arbortech mini carver to trench out the hollows, then some dremel tools to round off the edges, Then a metabo random rotary sander with a foam head to sand it down. The back is also scalloped to match the front.

Here is the finished butterfly/scallop bowl on its stand. There aren't two of them I'm afraid as the second one cracked on the join while it was being turned. I'm not sure about the solid fronted stand. I may cut it out so it loooks like a bridge. What do you think?
I love spalted unknown wood. And when the first spigot breaks you can be sure you are eventually going to get something special, even if it is 20 broken spigots.
Nice work.

It's coming along. The two outside halves have been scalloped, not fully finished yet but they have a coat of sanding sealer. One side of the inside has been scalloped. I'm just plucking up the courage to do the other half now. The hard bit is transferring the scallop pattern from the...
Big change of plan. The butterfly bowl is now going to be a scallop shell.
When I took it off the lathe it just looked too bland and then it struck me that the shape looked like a scallop shell. So I decided to cut the shell grooves in it. The picture is the work in it's early stages.
I'm...
Here are some pics of the first butterfly platter in production. I used a screw chuck to hold it on the lathe to turn the bottom. I guessed the center of gravity wasn't in the waist and I guessed right. I'm going to invent a "centre of gravity ommeter". I'll make a fortune methinks.
The...
