    Router plane on sapele

Thank you. That’s interesting. Was it much out of flat? I guess I was hoping that being Veritas I wouldn’t have to worry about that. I dislike flattening a lot but understand it’s a necessary evil. I’ll have a look at mine. Never thought about using clear acrylic as the platform before. I...

    Router plane on sapele

Thank you everyone for your responses. It’s the first time I have worked with sapele so it’s good to know what it’s character is. Great suggestions about table sawing it or placing another piece over the top. I love how there are usually always solutions available. I will work on technique and...

    Router plane on sapele

I’ve been making another oilstone box in sapele, and as with my previous one I have been getting a lot of tear out when router planing the bottom of the recesses. Is this likely to just be a sharpness issue (it is a veritas router plane and I’m still getting used to trying to keep the iron...

    Shooting board woes

I’m planning on making the English Woodworker’s shooting board. It is a bench hook anyhow and has some good skills I need to develop. If it is out of square then he mentions you can plane the edge back into square but I would probably just use it as a bench hook by that point. I made the Paul...

How would you make this oilstone box lid with hand tools?

Did you enjoy it? Did he enjoy it? That’s all that matters right?

How would you make this oilstone box lid with hand tools?

I had a go at an oilstone box. I’m pretty pleased with the result although it’s a long way from a fine piece. I think it will grace the workbench nicely especially after it gets worn in. I made it with a piece of sapele I had. I was pleased to use it although since it was a random offcut it may...

    Old school horsing around

It’s a beautiful piece, love it painted too. I am intrigued by this ‘squaring device’ though. Any more info or photos?

Withdrawn Boker Congress Whittler woodcarving knife

Boker Congress Whittler. Has 4 carbon steel blades and rosewood scales. It's in excellent working condition. I didn't get this as a collector's piece so all the blades have been rebevelled and there are some scratches on the main blade etching. I've had it from new for ten years and used it...

Pitting on back of vintage rebate plane iron

Ok, so I was prepared to just leave it and see how I got on. But I watched the Bill Anderson excerpt on restoring rebate planes on YouTube (woodandshop) and he mentioned zirconia for lapping. I thought I might as well give it a try just for experience so bought a metre of 80 grit cloth backed...

How would you make this oilstone box lid with hand tools?

That's a really great suggestion, thanks. I was thinking that I'm going to need to bolster the end grain sections well on both sides with sacrificial pieces on this first box I'm doing. Hopefully it will be simple to find a workholding solution for it.

How would you make this oilstone box lid with hand tools?

I can't believe I never thought of that, just turning the box over to get the other side of the stone! Great idea. I love these decorative boxes though.

How would you make this oilstone box lid with hand tools?

Thanks all. I don't have a Forstner bit but I can see why it's an attractive idea. I started a box yesterday with a piece of sapele which was only just thick enough really for a 1" stone. Of course I didn't take into account the amount of wood removed by the saw ripping it in half and then...
