I would have a look at the videos on the website startwoodworking (sorry being a newb I can't post links) they pretty much rely on power tools but they have some simple plans for you to follow......including a small box which they make with handtools

Aldi are doing small air compressors on Thursday £100 but does have a 3 year warranty (tried to post a link but I'm not worthy) They are also selling various accessories including nail guns for £20......
