    Sheffield saw and plane making

Amazing what monotonous practice will do. The sign of a true artist.

    Hotrod your Lie-Nielsen #60 1/2

I bought one and thankfully didn't get slugged with any import duties. A pure vanity I admit as it does indeed make adjustment a bit easier, but nothing to write home about. Perhaps I'd get better mileage out of using in on a different plane as opposed to my LN 60.5.

    LN No9 Mitre Plane

I have a LN no. 9 for sale. Will be cleaning it up, sharpening it, taking some photos and putting it in the sale forum some time next week.

    Hotrod your Lie-Nielsen #60 1/2

Henrey Eckert will be noticing a spike in UK orders now as I've ordered one also. Hope they don't run out!

    Which Mallet?

I think the traditional advice is to use a wooden mallet unless your chisels have a ferrule at the striking end. Having said that, for the smaller chisels which typically don't take much hitting to use, a small metal headed mallet should be fine. I use the Veritas journeyman's mallet. If I...

Where Can I Buy A Reasonable Quality Rebate Block Plane?

+1 for the WH plane. I have one and it's really nice. Damn good value.

    British Low Angle Block Plane

It must be tough for UK distributors at the moment. I've just made a major purchase from Dictum. Nearly half the UK price plus they are sending it to me DHL business premium for no cost. I did think twice about it, but in the long run it's saved me over £200.

Hand plane wood then use a thicknesser - does it work?

I can highly recommend the Makita 2012NB thicknesser.

    Veritas or PAX?

The Veritas DT saw is well made and good value. However, it is quite light and 20 tpi. The PAX is much more expensive but has a brass back which makes it heavier and that reportedly aids in cutting. Also, a 15 tpi saw may be better (it's more aggressive and so quicker; many woodworkers (e.g...

    Luban no. 102 block plane

A really beautifully made little plane. Can't believe the build quality for the price. The only defect is the sole is not that flat, but for a small block plane, that's not very important. Well done Workshop Heaven.

    WoodRiver 5½ vs Clifton 5 - a comparison

Interesting. Thanks for the review. My own experience of Clifton is not great. I purchased a 3110 3-in-1 shoulder plane on special when Axminster was getting out of Cliftons. I found a lot of sharp molding lines that I had to file away before it became comfortable to use. I then discovered, the...

Why no rebates for fitting into a housing joint?

Thanks all for your comments. Indeed PAC1, that is the method Chris Schwarz recommends as an oldie and a goodie. I'd rather steer away from sliding dovetails for the moment since I'm still trying to master simple housings with handtools only. CHJ, that's really interesting. It is in fact the...
