    SC3 jaw carriers

I may have not fully explained myself. The jaws can be changed pretty quickly by undoing the hex-head screws that hold the jaws on the carriers. A jaw change is just 8 screws off, new jaws in position, 8 screws back in.

    SC3 jaw carriers

Hi Strat. I can't be absolutely certain about the SC3, but I have an SC4, which I assume is a very similar design, only larger. The jaw carriers on the SC4 are not easy to remove, there is a locking circlip ring inside the chuck, which prevents the jaws being wound fully out. The Sorby...

    How good is this...

Amazing. Quite apart from the skill involved to actually make it, the artistic ingenuity required to conceive the idea is astounding.

    Gouge size and log rolling

Most sources seem to advise that a 3/8 bowl gouge is a good multi-purpose bowl gouge size, and it's what I use. I would say 5/8 is a big tool, and will need a powerful motor and good technique to manage. I prefer a 1/8 parting tool, or even a 1/16, otherwise you can waste a lot of material in...

End grain , large “ monkey puzzle “ bowl . Turning the inside ?

    Preventing cracking in new blanks

It seems a balance needs to be struck. If I had a special piece of wood I would take the precaution of sealing all round (PVA glue is my go-to), and then be prepared to wait for the slower drying time. If I had plenty of the wood, and wasn't too bothered about some pieces showing some cracking...

    SK100 Chuck equivalent.

I had an Axminster lathe with a 1"x8tpi spindle thread, but wanted to future-proof my chuck incase I upgraded my lathe to a more modern machine with the more common M33x3.5 thread. I bought the Record Power SC4 Chuck, as they sell inserts to fit almost any spindle size. I have also recently...

    Bowl Gouge Advice Sought

It's not just you. I was just lucky - right place right time. The cost of used tools seems absurd, as you say. Often, by the time they add postage, I could buy new from an online retailer with free P&P. Just keep running the eBay and FB searches, and eventually something cheap and local will...

    Bowl Gouge Advice Sought

As with Richard, I am a lockdown woodturner, having only started around Christmas, and I too had a cheap (but satisfactory) set of tools, missing a bowl gouge. So, I offer no expertise, just a new-comers opinion... I a moment of Internet over-excitement I clicked Buy on a 3/8 Robert Sorby...

    small steps,

Hi Woodfarmer, I am a relative novice, and first-time poster having lurked around this forum for 6 months or so. But glad to hear you've been lured back to turning. I have just upgraded from an Axminster hobby lathe to an older Swivel head Nova, with the intention of trying some larger...
