    Rust on plane bodies

Hi Mike I'm not sure which model your Stanley is. When you say it has a "full width blade", do you mean it's a rebate plane? Or a shoulder plane? I don't know if some vintages of plane are more prone to rust than others but I do find that rust appears on certain parts of tools stored in my...

    Yellow Lake honing stone

Great buy. I have a soft spot for vintage advertising and packaging and that label is worth £10 by itself, I reckon! Years ago, I used a 50:50 mixture of 3-in-1 oil and white spirit or parafin on the only natural oilstone I had. This seemed a bit quicker than oil by itself. Regards.

Slack Sellars & Co. No.95 saw question

Hi Daryl I have a "Speed" tenon saw made by Slack Sellars and Company that I bought new in 1970. The blade and brass spine are excellent but the original beech handle was uncomfortable and downright ugly so I replaced it some years ago. I've always kept it as my "best" tenon saw. So, at least...

    Wood choice for toolmaking

I used to have a weakness for vintage chisels and must have rummaged through hundreds of them in junk shops, car boot sales and flea markets over the years. I seem to remember that split or badly damaged boxwood handles were every bit as common as bashed up beech handles. This suggests to me...

    Rosewood Block Plane

Pete Never mind the photographic kit, the plane looks great! Evergreen

What is the last useful thing you did with a chisel?

Fitting new hinges to every internal door in the house. The new solid brass hinges are slighly bigger than the old brassed mild steel hinges I'm replacing and their screw holes are in slightly different places. Therefore lots of plugging old screw holes, trimming and fiddling around. And...

    Moulding planes and christmas presents.

Very impressive workmanship! Maybe it's just an effect of perspective but your cupboard seems to be very deep (i.e. front to back measurement). Did this cause any particular problems of construction?

I only left them uncovered for a couple of nights.

I used to have a garage workshop that was integral with the house and it stayed relatively warm. No significant rust problems. Then I moved house and for the last five years, I've had to keep most of my tools in a very draughty, unheated, stand alone garage with a pitched roof. To my amazement...

    Bootfair this Weekend?

A M&W combi square for £1?! That has to be the bargain of the month, I reckon!

Finally got a NORRIS - for a FIVER!!!

Hi Jimi It is indeed a beautiful little clamp. But isn't the "W+V" design more likely to damage round stock than "V+V" since it effectively uses only three points of contact rather than the more usual four? Or does the flattish central point of the "W" compensate for that?

    1200 Bamboo Skewers

That's cunning, Pete. How much of the skewers' length is glued to the box, please?

    Carboot Sept 09

Hi Pete Looks pretty reasonable to me. Those Record G cramps should clean up a treat and the small tenon saw (or is it a dovetail saw?) looks like it has a decent handle which probably indicates a reasonable quality tool. Who's the saw maker, may I ask?

    Mystery Tool?

How bizarre. It's the short handle that puzzles me. A retrieval tool or fruit picking tool usually has a long handle. I'm struggling to see how a light duty gripping tool, if it's only 200mm long, is better than your own fingers. But perhaps it's an accessory for inserting some component (a...

    my new workbench build

That bench and vice look pretty solid to me and all for zero pence? Well done, just brilliant.
