    CVT (Autogearbox)

Gerry, treat yourself and get an auto - most of us that have done would not want to go back to manuals. With hybrids and electric cars soon set to dominate new vehicle sales, it won't be many years before all except a nostalgic few will be driving anything other than an automatic. CVT's do...

    Shooting board woes

Rich, like you, I am also at that point where I need to make a new shooting board. The only twist with mine is the slightly different use ... ... - a backing board for target practice ! :giggle:

Silver pigmented finishes for external oak

Thanks Neil, those look reasonably subtle shades, which is just what I was after. I will order some samples and see what they look like in real life.

Silver pigmented finishes for external oak

Like many on here, I like to see the naturally weathered silver finish on external oak, but have to admit it requires a good degree of patience, at least a couple of years if facing south, or sometimes more than a lifetime on a north face that never gets to see the sun. Have to concede too...

    Owning/Maintaining woodland/farmland

It is a great feeling when you can buy a small piece of England/Wales (or even Scotland, but be extra careful there or you may find Mrs Sturgeon has plans to take it from you), however unless you are very lucky, be prepared for lots of disappointments before you get there. I've had that same...

    Editing again

Anyone else on here a member of SmallWoods ? Nick really took the magazine side of that forwards. Heard rumour his new hand woodworking mag will be called SlowWoods. Issue 1 comes with a free packet of Ash dieback resistant seeds, it's out next month. Issue 2 is on working with Ash dieback...

Where do people buy their metal stock from?

If you want to buy smaller quantities of metal online, I have found MetalMania to be one of the most reliable sources.https://www.metalmaniauk.com/ They sell 250x250 x 1.2mm CZ108 spec brass for £14.10 including vat. Larger sheets work out a fair bit cheaper

    An alternative(ish) to painters pyramids

Brad nails shot through thin scraps of ply make good temporary supports, though after standing on one recently, a nice soft glue stick sounds much kinder on flesh and bone :)

    anyone played Knur and Spell?

My dad once told me that when he was a young lad (which would be around 1930), large crowds of people would meet up to watch clandestine games of knur and spell. Dates and venues were kept secret because lots of illegal betting went on. The place he lived at Parkwood Springs in Sheffield was...

    Bosch BPD40

Pleased to hear your BPD40 is living up to expectations. Mine must be a couple of years old and has worked well for wood and light metal use. So easy to change speed with the gearbox Hi/Lo selector and variable speed, I wouldn't want to go back to pulley swapping with a belt. The digital...

    Learning to weld

If you need/want to get something made with minimal effort, or the metal is 2mm or less, then MIG is probably the best way to go. Downside is that metal must be clean and the shielding gas easily gets blown away by even a light wind, so not suitable for outdoor use. MMA takes more practice...

    Square section steel tube

As well as the standard and very rounded corner box section mild steel, you can also buy ERW box section, which comes with much tighter radius corners. Lots of places sell it, Metalmaniauk are fairly good if you only want a small quantity. They have 80mm ERW. 80mm ERW box

    Choice of workshop vac?

Mark, I have a Fein Dustex which has excellent filtration, even on the brightest day I see nothing coming out. Not exactly cheap (£225 from Miles Tools), but still a lot less than a new pair of lungs. It is surprisingly quiet too, only 67 dB.

    Professional Grade Angle Grinders

I agree with you on cost alone, though personally I don't want to go taking apart and re-crimping leads on a brand new grinder - well, at least not until I've cut through the cable with a slitting disc  :)
