safe edge on a buarstuard file

Just a minor correction on this point to prevent future confusion in those not in the know, b*astard files are at least one notch down from the coarsest cut in conventional naming (which not all makers follow). The usual convention in coarseness grading or 'cut' in main-sequence files is: Dead...

safe edge on a buarstuard file

Rule of thumb is if it gets too hot cool it down, or work more slowly. You should do this work bare-handed for various reasons, and it's easy to keep on top of overheating that way. The body of the file should never get even close to 100° so well below any temperature that puts temper at risk.

Does anyone have a sharpening question?

Er, what? I can't think of a single woodworking bod I know or know of who uses a belt linisher or a grinder that will throw sparks who doesn't have it in their main workshop. Most have no choice as MikeG has alluded to already. A grinder in the woodworking shop has been common for decades...

    Wood ID challenge

Colour alone is no indicator of a wood as a general rule. You can quite easily find examples from a single species that are completely unalike in general colouring, some being fairly textbook but others being much lighter, maybe darker and others still with a tint that's unusual or very rarely...

    EBay slippery selling

FatmanG, and anyone else of a similar opinion about eBay (which I largely share), I have three words for you: Gumtree, Gumtree and Gumtree. I've been collecting a list of bargains on Gumtree for some years now, just to sort of get a feel for the market but also to help out occasionally here...

Cabinet Scraper Burnisher - Which of the three?

Steel 'quality' is sort of the wrong way to think about it, although it's a convenient shorthand way of referring to the qualities of the steel in a given tool it's open to being interpreted in various ways. The thing with carbon steel is that it's dirt cheap, and easy to reliably heat treat...

    shellac for a beginner

Nope, not an issue. At normal cuts you just don't see it, the faint dye gets swamped by the native colour of the shellac. If you were using paler grades of shellac and a heavy dilution it might possibly remain visible in the made-up liquid, but at the coat thickness applied to the wood that...

    shellac for a beginner

I know it's not what you asked for but I promise you it's worth getting the flakes and making your own. Quite apart from anything if you use it fairly slowly you'll have a stock that will see you through the next few years, at least, but once made into liquid form shellac has a very finite shelf...

Does anyone have a sharpening question?

A long-standing issue we've had has finally been taken care of (not before time in the opinion of many). Had it not been this thread would not have been viable because it would almost certainly have been derailed by argument and infighting, and this could have started as early as the first page...

Cabinet Scraper Burnisher - Which of the three?

Yes but only if this is the case. That no-name burnisher you mention seems to be quite decent; if it performed this well in a direct comparison with the Veritas it demonstrated that it was. Harking back to previous posts saying that the shaft of a screwdriver will do the job. Well some can for...

    japanese saw.

Can't speak to the accuracy of this one claim, but I can tell you that there are [insert a very large amount] of knockoffs made in China, you see this browsing AliExpress a lot. A lot. Some are just similar, lookalike products, but others are the very definition of counterfeits or fakes. So...

Where can I buy small countersunk brass screws??

You've found screws you can use but let's say there weren't any short enough, wouldn't it be simple enough to nip off the ends of 6mm screws if they were solid brass? A pointed end is not important to the function of a screw in wood once a pilot hole is made, and with solid-brass screws often...

    oil/Arkansas stones

Yes isn't it unfortunate they share the same TLA?! The first time I saw it mentioned in a thread I thought India Pale Ale was what was being recommended  Oddly, this isn't completely beyond the realm of possibility because some do use cheap vodka or similar as a light honing fluid. This...
