    One inch legs

You have the appropriately sized hole saw in your hands - you're just bashing it with a hammer instead of twisting it. File teeth into the end, drill a hole through both sides a little way up and insert a rod (screw driver) - rough and ready manual hole saw.

Does the method make a difference???

Consider - rosettes are often made of "tiles" - it doesn't need to be in one piece - no one will know (except us :) ). Don't know what style of circle cutter you have, but something simple can be made with an iced lolly stick with a scalpel/craft_knife blade sticking through. Use multiple...

    Brace, non ratchet

A ratchet lets you take advantage of just the strongest part of your sweep. Alternatively, eat more spinach, get a bigger brace or an auger

    Brace, non ratchet

Was going to suggest Gaignard Millon on Rue Jules Vallès in Paris, but they only list a 4 jaw brace at the mo. Worth a visit for other stuff though. They do carry Veritas, so may be able to source their hex bit adapter for braces - alternatively fine-tools in Germany have an adapter

    Finally admitting defeat....

I'm just in West Cornforth, but I haven't sharpened a saw (nor used one much) for a while - hands haven't been behaving

Salt and vinegar with your plane sir? (#4 1/2 restoration)

IIRC from school back in the dim and distant, salt plus a weak acid (vinegar, citric or similar) gives you a buffered low strength hydrochloric acid - a taste well remembered from mis-pipetting HCl - this will be stronger than the vinegar alone, and maintain its potency longer.

Narex going back. Now what for mortisers?

OBMC for me too - vintage or Ray's. Since they're for belting not paring the sharpenability of D2 seemed just fine to me, with water or oil stones, though don't think anything can better a nice old laminated OBMC. The Sorby sash mortise chisels referenced above are purdy, but believe they have...

    Another unusual sharpening method.

Completely barking. See the size of that registration surface? An arthritic chipmonk with parkinsons could freehand that first attempt

    Record Hand Planes RIP

Yus, afraid the current era will likely be looked on as a second dark ages by historians of the future

The Veritas Custom Planes - more than a review

Good stuff. Am however curious if that was arthritic mp/ip joints only rather than carpus as well? With the latter (as well as arthritis in (esp pollux) mp and ip joints, I find the lack of wood higher up an advantage of the more shapely handle, as it allows good registration with...

    Skelton Saws

Nice looking saw, dog of a site. He needs to throw out the jquery - it's slower to load than the accursed fb.

Chisels sizes, what for what work?

In consolation, from one who has done the same in the past, it is useful having at least one with an inch or so of polish for guaging square and 45° cuts in stringing or similar. A wide chisel is handy for emphasising knife lines for hinges and locks. Also easier to maintain horizontal (side to...

    what are CLIFTON doing.....

Suspect that's exactly what it was, and damn all to do with "finish quality"

    what are CLIFTON doing.....

I think the iron, cap iron and overall aesthetic already warranted it. A properly angled handle is the only refinement for me - otherwise it needs replacing/reshaping to minimise stress on my wrist (which may be a more sensitive gauge of the optimum angle than a healthy wrist.)

    what are CLIFTON doing.....

The loss of BRG, which followed the livery of Record's aborted premium range (Calvert Stevens) is a shame, especially when grunge grey is the alternative (to me, it's as if they're trying to hide in the shadows instead of celebrating their old world roots) Could always buck the thick iron trend...
