    Strange old spade bit.

Anyone any idea what this was used for? I've never come across one before. No cutting lips, only spurs, so it can't have gone deep. It's about 15cm long.

    Sharpening stone identifiaction please

Yes, it's 8"x2"x1". I did have a look on the google but I couldn't see anything similar. At first I thought it might be some sort of sandstone due to the markings but it's too smooth for that. And there is very little translucency. I've since tried it out and it seems to polish more than hone if...

    Sharpening stone identifiaction please

Can anyone give me an idea as to what this stone is? Came across it in a junk shop a few weeks back. It was completely black when I got it. Got around to cleaning it this weekend and it seems to be a natural stone of some sort. It's very smooth to the touch now it's been cleaned and flattened...

    saw file size

I have acquired a small tenon saw that needs a good sharpen. Unfortunately all the saw files I have are a bit too big- they are giving me all gullet and not a lot of tooth. Its 16 tpi. What size file should I be using and can anyone recommend a brand? Cheers David

    spirit level resto question

Does anyone know what the material/substance was that they used to bed and level the glass vials in the old spirit levels. I need to replace the vial in an old wooden one, the original being cracked and devoid of fluid, and on taking it apart it looks like some sort of putty but it seems too...

    Tool makers marks

Thanks for that link. I'll have a browse. There isn't any particular tools I have in mind although I have a mark on an old auger bit shaft that I would like to identify. My thinking is that if it has a mark on it is should be of reasonable quality, compared to a lot of the rubbish monkey metal...

    Tool makers marks

Does anybody know of a reasonably comprehensive list of tool makers marks available anywhere; preferably English. I find it interesting to find out who made what and when should I come across a tool with a mark on it. I've tried the usual google search, etc but there is just too much stuff to...

    Odd auger type bit

So by what you've said it's got to be a dowel rounder/tipper then. The cup part on the end is about 10mm deep. Yes, it is Mathieson stamped on it.

    Odd auger type bit

Anyone know what this is used for? I could guess but I'd probably be wrong.

    log saw sharpening?

It is one of the things that people inexperienced in any craft seem to forget; just because there is a video on the web about something , it doesnt mean that it is in any way correct. Some people just seem to love the sound of their own voice and to see their face on the screen. I have come...

    log saw sharpening?

thanks for the responses and the links. I think i'll have a go at sharpening it and see how it performs. It was only a few quid and it's only for the house fire logs. Not too fond of the bow saws myself as I find they tend to flex too much in anything larger than about 6".

    log saw sharpening?

A few saw sharpening questions if I may. Would I be correct in calling this a 'kings tooth' profile? What do you use to set this saw with. Is it one of the bigger saw sets or is it done with a hammer and small anvil to swage the teeth over? When it comes to sharpening, would I file the inside...

    Missing record 050 screws

I've eventually bought a Record No 050 from the bay but unfortunately it's missing the spur screws. By some miracle the spurs are still there. Does anyone know what the thread is so I can source something similar and cut them down to fit. Thanks

    Expensive chisels

Ahhh. I seeeeee. So nobody was insane enough to buy any at that price. Let that be a lesson. Nothing on ebay is what it seems.
