Advice on potential purchase of a workshop

Ha. Just read around this a bit. Good advice.

    Designing a new workshop

The only question I have about the extraction being outside is that they're very good at taking heat out too...

    Banggood, VAT, import duties

I've used them a fair amount and never had an issue. Generally for goods that are Chinese sourced in any case such as those little inverters to use 3 phase machinery on my garage supply. They take credit card payments so no need for burner bank accounts

Excuse my ignorance, but what's in the vapour tank? Ethylene (TCE)?

    Drill Bit Advice

Cobalt. The reason you get advised against carbide is that it's brittle and can break if your hand wanders during drilling. https://fmcarbide.com/blogs/techtalks/cobalt-vs-carbide-drill-bit

    Bending a silver steel rod?

Hello everyone Well, it's done! Clamped in vice, a hardwood sleeve drilled and then thumped judiciously with a lump hammer. Came out just right, works a treat and looks original. No heat used because the butane canister turned out to be empty (too much creme brulee I expect). Thanks again...

    Bending a silver steel rod?

OK. Now I'm unclear whether to heat with my feeble blow torch (more useful for brulee tbh) or not. If I put the rod across a couple of engineering bricks with a gap between and whack a cold chisel on the gap will I just break the bricks, the rod, both or what?

    Bending a silver steel rod?

I'm making a replacement clamping lever for a drill press collar. It's 5/16 silver steel rod and I need to put a 50-60o bend in it. I'm worried that if I just put it in the vice and heave/bash it, then either I'll get nowhere or I'll snap it? I don't have access to anything remotely like a...

    Sold Swiss Pear

Well, today I met Custard - and a lovelier chap you cannot imagine. To be honest I was a bit star-struck - me a bodger in the presence of a true craftsman. So: 1. Custard is just lovely 2. Niall, if you would like a piece, get in touch - my main project will have some over. Although you might...

A bit wider... but how much? Drilling template, one round, one elongated hole

Speaking as a weekend warrior who regularly messes up jobs, I fervently wish that getting a tradesperson in equated even a little to "get it done properly". Mostly DIYers try to do it properly but get ambushed by substrate or poor/inappropriate tools (posidrive Vs Phillips being a common...

    Meddings or Fobco?

I'm just finishing re-furbishing a Meddings DrilTru MkII; it's taken a while, and in the meantime a Fobco Star has arrived. They're both great drills. Which to keep and why? Both are benchtop and neither has any fancy differentiating features.
