    other woods used for tools - fruitier (pear etc), chene (oak), ash (frene) and beech (hetre) in rough order of cost - looks like I'm trying to show off, but just been reading an old French tool cata, so let me off -- also use box as UK but not so common and some form of holm oak?

    I think this is the same as cormier (French), which was/is much used for the best quality wood tool handles/plane bodies etc

    Surform with a difference

    Cintride (of Bakewell, Derbs) made tungsten carbide grit 'blades' of 3 grades to fit the Surform (UK invention, company later taken over by Stanley, who then dropped their similar Stanley-Shaper line). Useful kit.

    When I was working in eng - remember visiting a brass/bronze foundry in Huddersfield/Halifax area which also had a (steel) chain-making division - wonderful to watch the hand hammer welding of the links

    will do if nec but a v straightforward 26in hand saw, trad horned handle w 3 flat-top brass screws, no medallion, no etching

    I have a vintage hand saw marked 'Pioneer, Sheffield' (stamped on the blade) - anyone know if which maker used this, or is it the name-mark of a maker? - name is stamped, not etched, on blade - don't see it at first look through S Barley's reference book.

    My great great gfather was coxswain on the N Deal lifeboat about that time and a bit before - there's an old book about the crews -"Heroes of the Goodwin Sands" ps this should actually be reply to Phil

    see you're in bradford - I call that town the birthplace of British cast iron vice-making - Parkinson and earlier - if you have too many - is there a Bradford industrial museum that highlights this and could do with examples I might have one or two to give)

    chopsticks, toothpicks & skewers - uses

    anyone else use these as handy and v cheap dowels, plugs & hole fillers knowledge about woods (eg bamboo, whitewood) to share? I always keep a range of these for odd jobs (eg just filled a couple of ancient wormholes w superglued toothpicks - hammer in, pare off)
