    How noisy are portable thicknessers?

Hi, The short answer, as many have said, is that they are really very noisy and they are on for quite a while, usually with some sort of extraction running to prevent you turning into woodworking's equivalent of Lot's Wife. To put it in some sort of context: I have the Makita NB2012...

Time for a proper thicknesser, suggestions ?

I have the Makita, I don't think that you'll regret getting it. Mine arrived pretty much set up and has worked flawlessly since. Snipe appears to be well controlled (barely visible) and the finish I get on oak is nice and clean, almost shiny. The depth stop, although simple, also functions...

Metabo SXE 450 Duo sander problem

At least I was struggling to turn it in the correct direction! Looks like I'll have to invest in something with a bit more leverage than the allen key that Metabo supply for the purpose. Failing that, it's the long trip to the service centre. Thanks to you both for the comments. Cheers, Daniel

Metabo SXE 450 Duo sander problem

Hi, I was wondering whether you'd managed to remove the sanding plate. I was trying to change the plate on mine earlier today. I couldn't get the allen screw to shift in either direction. Is there some sort of trick? Thanks Daniel

    Thin wood?

James Binning from Deep in Wood (www.deepinwood.co.uk) is a very helpful chap when it comes to wood supplies in and around Oxfordshire. He'd probably be able to assist you in milling stock to your requirements. Give him an Email and let him know what you're after. Cheers, Daniel

Rust Hands - I'm rusting my Veritas planes

Just a quick note for some of the members who have commented on this thread. Although it seems like a daft thing to say; if you've only just started rusting up your planes (after a lifetime of rust free working) then it may be worthwhile having a word with your doctor next time you see him...

    Advice needed for Table Saw

Hi, I have the UK equivalent of the Bosch 4100, here it's referred to as the GTS10 and comes with a few less accessories than the US model. That said, the saw works very well and is extremely accurate straight out of the box. It also appears to have more than enough power for everything I've...

    Biscuits V Domino's = strength ?

Hi, I've seen this discussion come up on a number of forums, with the discussion frequently degenerating into quite bitter disputes between the participants. Studies, similar to the ones referenced here are normally highlighted, which show that traditional M+T joints are amongst the strongest...

    Two joining questions

Hi, If you are connecting single narrow boards together to make a wider board then it isn't absolutely necessary to have anything more than glue holding them together as modern wood glues are amazingly strong. Of course you'll want to make sure that the edges of the boards to be joined are...

    workshop heating options

I'm going to second the idea of an oil filled radiator. I bought a real cheap one from Argos and connected it to one of those timer switches so that it comes on a few times during the day and night. So far it's on its lowest thermostat and power setting, but still seems to keep the shop (well...

    Moisture Content reader

Hi, I'm new around here, but I've been lurking for a while. I normally use the cheap Axminster [MD2G] meter: http://www.axminster.co.uk/axminster-axminster-md2g-moisture-meter-prod22683/ Seems to work OK in my hands. Cheers, Daniel
