    Oak cot bed WIP

The mortices were very straightforward to cut once I made a jig to limit the length of each mortice, they were very close in size. You can always oversize the bars slightly and sand them to a snug fit

    Aged / Reclaimed Oak Finish

Could you recommend some finishes to play around with?

    Aged / Reclaimed Oak Finish

Hi all, I'm familiar with some of the Osmo Oil finishes, having used a number of their oils previously. However I'd like to try something different and I'd like to have a slightly more 'aged' look to the oak. Something along the lines of the below It's definitely a stain I'm after, and how...

Suggestions on how to improve my workshop

That's a cheap and cheerful SIP extractor ~ £90. It's really very good for the money. Bench is made from CLS timber, bench top from old roof rafters. No hardwoods there! Rick

Suggestions on how to improve my workshop

See my sig for a tour of my garage, similar setup to yours. As echoed here I would recommend: 1. Get as much stuff off the floor as possible, particularly shelving / racking 2. Consider re-organising your lumber, either on a wall rack or on the roof Good luck!

How to work out losses in reducing HVLP extractors?

Well, I can confirm that, by reducing a 100mm pipe down to 50mm for 3 metres, the resulting airflow is useless, far less than my cheap HPLV extractor. I may have just wasted £160

How to work out losses in reducing HVLP extractors?

Thanks Jimmy, hmm perhaps not so easy to work out for the layman! In the absence of anything more scientific I may have to just "stick my hand over the end" and see!

How to work out losses in reducing HVLP extractors?

At the risk of answering my own question, I came across this thread http://www.thewoodhaven2.co.uk/viewtopi ... 43&p=16000 (this is based on a discussion of 150mm extractor inlet and 100mm exhaust ports) Restriction of flow is relative to a combination of diameter and length. A short run of...

How to work out losses in reducing HVLP extractors?

In an effort to improve the dust collection in my workshop I've just invested in a Record Power CX2600 HVLP extractor, it's rated at 1.15 m3 /hr or 320 ltr/sec Unfortunately I didn't fully grasp the fact that HVLP work differently to HPLV extractors and am now trying to work out what that will...

    Biscuits, Dowels, Floating Tenons, M&T?

OK thanks Steve I'll look into that

    Biscuits, Dowels, Floating Tenons, M&T?

I find the longer fence helpful in aligning long stock, particularly on the infeed. I guess you're highlighting that the out feed side could be at risk of kickback? Even with a riving knife?

    Biscuits, Dowels, Floating Tenons, M&T?

Thanks custard, yes my saw is a cheapo jobbie My main gripe with it is it doesn't cut boards straight enough to joint two pieces of wood together without some small gaps, I'm still trying to work that one out. Either the fence has too much play in it or I need a zero clearance insert. I've...

    Biscuits, Dowels, Floating Tenons, M&T?

Thanks for the advice all. I think to be honest I didn't even consider a M&T joint on the project above as the material was only 20mm thick, but I suppose even a 7mm tenon would be quite strong. I guess biscuits would also have worked since there are 5 other mortices holding the pieces...

    Biscuits, Dowels, Floating Tenons, M&T?

I keep going round the houses on this so I thought perhaps the best bet would be to ask what the consensus is on here. Before the inevitable comes up, I know a Domino would be the best option, but as a hobbyist if I had £500 to spare I'd be spending it on upgrading my table saw first, so it's a...

    Making a Firewood Box

Good skills. I'd love to be able to joint boards by hand. I've spent many hours planing oak boards with a No 5 plane and found it impossible.
