Iron swap in A Lie Nielsen No3

Thank you for responses. Re the Quangcheng Blackswanwood - I agree - use them in a couple of old Records and they are good, I'd be happy to try one in the LN. I expect Matthew will know a solution. D_W - the cap may be the thing, the adjust slot seems higher than the Records etc... I think...

Iron swap in A Lie Nielsen No3

I'm sure this will have come up before but couldn't find reference. My LN No3 still has the original A2 in it and I want to swap to an O1. I emailed Ron Hock as I have one of his in my LN No62 (and it is mighty fine, but don't think he does them any more). He doesn't do irons for LNs now - I...

    Adirondak chairs - timber choice

Liking the shed/shack @Glitch - great colour. Think I know where those chairs came from (the larch is the clue). So a lot of good advice/input, thanks to all. I'm ruling out iroko now - I'm thinking a local (European) wood is appropriate, just as the originals used their own local suitable...

    Adirondak chairs - timber choice

well now.... didn't I have one of those a while backo_O SYP is an interesting one. Used sapele on a thing recently - never again for me (just personal). If I was in northern NY state I'd use Western red of course. This exercise reminds me I always aim to avoid African woods. Had a bad and very...

    Adirondak chairs - timber choice

Thanks - hadn't really thought of iroko. I recall it smells a bit nasty when worked (like bubinga, zebrano etc). I generally try to avoid African hardwoods (I'm guessing most iroko comes from Africa?). I am quite a fan of accoya and the design / setting would suit a paint or coloured stain...

    Adirondak chairs - timber choice

I believe the traditional choice is / was Northern / Canadian red cedar - but I expect that was partly because that's where they were. Here in the UK, I've considered Euro oak, Siberian larch, maybe a good grade redwood. Any ideas please?

Ashley Iles Butt Chisels - Quality Issue?

I got the 6 set a while ago, and sold them on. Mine were the same, also I reckon the steel was not great at all. And personally I don't care how they are ground, (by hand or machine) but true and square is not a big ask, it's expected. I got a 4 piece Luban set off the Bay (new) - steel about as...

    Andy T's block plane

Hi Andys - trust all is well. No AndyT, it's just a quartered board from my local (Morgans in Strood). Legs (3) are steamed beech so a fraction darker to add some visual mass down below. Basically it's a mid 60s plectrum on legs, and intentionally very Ercol.

    Andy T's block plane

This one's for Andy. A few years ago he gave me a small woodie block plane I had been admiring. I put a hefty camber on the iron to make it a small scrub. Used in ernest yesterday to put a big chamfer on the underside of a coffee table. Smaller plane in foreground, set with a healthy appetite...

Reynolds Hand Morticing Machine restored (finally).

Hi Chris (and Andy, yes, same number, same old habits :) Thank you very much for the message and very kind words. I don't recall that vice but yes, you should have taken it as it's probably still in the storage box from the move ! Really good to see the Reynolds and know it has been taken care...

    Luban butt chisels - recommended

Quick update - just put an edge on the 3/4. The back is fractionally concave, good. Just happened to use 3M film, and put a 30 degree on for starters. That's just in case, as I was prepared to go to 32 maybe - I use these with a mallet almost exclusively. By the way, the precision geometry of...

ASHLEY ILES MK.2 BUTT CHISEL 7/8 INCH (22MM)

I'll report back on the Lubans when I have them prepped, they need an edge put on but the primary grind is good. I picked up a friend's AI dovetail chisel the other day, a 3/4 I recall. The edge was rolled - a noticeable burr on the bevel side. That isn't wear - it was a kind of deformation or...

    Luban butt chisels - recommended

Sorry Andy, no idea... without smashing the handle. I suspect a tang as there is a separate tapered 'ferrule' and the actual chisel steel disappears into that. My best guess a tang. But the fit of all components is quite watch-like (Swiss I mean).

    Luban butt chisels - recommended

Hi Andy - I just pop back sometimes, miss the gang !! It's personal taste and style of working I suppose. I hold chisles right down at the cutting edge very often (when using mallet), so I have fast control of the edge placement. Given that I like shorter, and lower mass up top. So my...

    Luban butt chisels - recommended

Just got a set of 4 from eBay... what a find !! Beautifully made, however close you look into all the details these are really excellent. Bubinga handles suggests new old stock as Luban now use cherry I believe and anyway bubinga is outlawed. Feel is excellent too, proper butt chisel sizes (not...
