Advice on repair of sliding sash windows

Most of the sashes I work on are covered in panelling, mouldings, folding shutters etc. Easier to repair on the bench but you add a fair few days of making good so, at least for me, it’s not economical.

Advice on repair of sliding sash windows

My box frame repairs are very similar to @Ollie78. I take out the pulley stile, cutting at the point just above the bottom of the meeting rail of the top sash which hides the join permanently. I always make the new pockets bigger as I’m usually replacing for longer weights which won’t fit...

    Hc260 planer needs fixing

Thank you. Not the capacitor as I’ve had that problem before. In any case, it powered up fine when putting main voltage to the motor. That’s what I did in the end. I opened up the relay switch (see photos below) and found burnt out contacts. Luckily, the switch came with three sets of contacts...

    Hc260 planer needs fixing

Hi all. Happy new year. My metabo planer/thicknesser made a funny noise as I switched it off and then wouldn’t turn on again. The switch also made a buzzing sound if you held in the red ‘off’ button. I hooked up a test plug straight to the motor (see wiring diagram below) bypassing everything...

    Grain, shrinkage and stability

Just to update this..... I needn't have worried it seems. The wood behaved impeccably. I planed just enough to square it off and then left it 8 days in stick. It stayed spot on so I planed it by a few mm every other day until final dimensions, mortice and tenon, profile, glue and dryseal, bosh...

Can't find a router cutter to make this ovolo

Thanks all for replies I called everyone on the list of suggestions (Jeremy from Applyby was a pleasure to talk to in particular) and was then referred to another company who quoted around £200. I shoulda planned this weeks ago so that the waiting time wouldn't delay me but I must get on so...

Can't find a router cutter to make this ovolo

Looking at pictures of a 12mm radius cutter, I'm not sure (without having it in my hand) that there is 2.5mm worth of cutting blade available to create the quirks without hitting the material that holds the two blades. I have removed the bottom section of router cutters before (the bit that...

Can't find a router cutter to make this ovolo

Yes it does look like an upside down router cutter! To clarify, the picture is the shape of the glazing bar that I want to make, specifically, the one on the right.

Can't find a router cutter to make this ovolo

Evening I need to recreate this ovolo profile. The ovolo on the left is a standard 9mm radius with quirk. I need to make the ovolo on the right which is actually a section of 12mm radius arc, contained within the corners of a 9mm square, so not a true quadrant profile. Ive looked all through...

    Grain, shrinkage and stability

Hairy, so long as it doesn't move after final dimensions, then it should all fit in the weetabix box nicely

    Grain, shrinkage and stability

Hi robinbhm, brooks bros is my usual yard and have always been a fantastic place to deal with. It's just since the restrictions, the lads picking the timber just aren't as fussy as I'd like them to be. My fault. I only recently depleted the last of my stock and was hoping they'd changed policy...

    Grain, shrinkage and stability

Well I went with dzj and doug71 and ended up with some lovely rift sawn stiles :D I'll skim off the top and bottom faces tomorrow so that all 4 sides have fresh meat showing and see what happens by the weekend. The cut side from the inner is showing 2-3% higher than the outside so it should be...

    Grain, shrinkage and stability

Jacob, agreed. I also understand why picking through the stack ends up with a pile of rejects by the end. However, before corona, I have always picked myself. Also, the unsorted, joinery grade redwood fas (1sts and 2nds) can't be trusted as I find I keep 1 length in every 3-5 I pick up and...

    Grain, shrinkage and stability

I usually go to a proper yard but their policy is still collection only. I already have a massive stack of timbers from the last few orders that were just too twisted so decided to find the nearest place that they would actually let me sort through the pile myself. Obviously this meant very...

    Grain, shrinkage and stability

Hi guys, hope you can help. I have some rough sawn, 100x50 redwood (5ths unfortunately, all I can get at the moment). They are straight and MC of around 8%. I am making sash windows and need to take 40x52 sections from them. Usually I would take off an equal 24mm from each side to get me from...
