    Child safe finish

Please be extremely careful to observer the legal requirements for small toys for children. The fact you are not marketing an item does not mean you do not have a responsibility to safeguard the child. See this link on my site:- Chas Jones, Hobby Turner

    electrical testing

Once when helping with the complete rewire of a large house in Malvern, the qualified (to local elec. company 11,000 volt line work) electrician and I checked that the 2nd. floor we were working on had been isolated by removing both live and neutral feeds from the dist. box and clamping them to...

    Chuck jaw carrier thread

Strange, the Axminster Jaw compatible carriers I have for my Versa Chuck take standard 5mm X 0.8mm pitch socket head screws to full depth, if the threaded sockets were 1 mm pitch the 5mm screws I have would hardly get past 2-3 threads. And yes, I have checked with thread gauges, taps and dies...

    Turning is Heaven in 2011

Compliments on the segmented top, looks like you are now well and truly in the 'addicted' category. You need to start posting in your own threads rather than your work getting lost in this old thread.

Axminister - How is the quality?

Andy, the format for the thread reference with the new software has changed, I have tried (an managed) with some links I had, to change the format but I currently have not been able to get to Neils post, I guess he would not be able to keep it updated though if it was found, I can't amend my...

    Food board sealing/finishing

I personally would use Food safe Mineral Oil, (Liquide Paraffin BP) Lighter grade from the likes of Chestnut finishes should penetrate more readily than standard products from a pharmacy.

    Cheery logs

At just 200mm long they are more akin to thick slices* as far as turning wood is concerned and at great risk of splitting. 300+mm long X 200mm diameter would have been a safer bet, even then I would have suggested splitting them down the middle through the core. Personally I would cut them...

    Condensation....I never knew you

Don't use plastic, not a good insulator, use an old bed sheet, old mattress cover, old child's cot blanket. Anything that retains motor and bearing warmth when used keeps them rust free under covers when not in use. If machines rarely used a low wattage heater in the base works wonders, in the...

    wooden toy blocks

Be careful what wood you use for young children, Iroko for instance can cause sever allergic reactions. Its as well to look up woods in general for your own comfort so that you can spot any reactions whilst working it. Some links here And an informative discourse on the subject by a forum...

    Condensation....I never knew you

Are you really sure about that, water condenses out onto a colder surface I think you have got your reasoning about face. Your previous comment about your sister took furniture to Auckland with higher humidity and it did not split or crack is to be expected, expose wood to higher air moisture...

    Condensation....I never knew you

As long as you arrange for any metal surfaces to be warmer than the ambient air temperature you will not get condensation on them to cause rusting even in high humidity. Same applies to any surface really but metal tools and machines are usually the critical ones. Keep tools such as planes etc...

    Cascamite WBP

I have found I can get away with light resistant spirit stain* despite the glue being water activated, mixed in with the powder immediately before mixing the spirit volatiles disperse very quickly, I have not had reason to doubt the strength of the bond and the set glue still has the ability to...
