    Head torch recommendations?

Over the years, being a keen outdoorsy type, I've always used Petzl - they are the industry leaders in the headlamp market for good reason. The head bands are still replaceable, and in my experience the only other brand which holds a candle to Petzl is Black Diamond. Both manufacture headlamps...

    Why do we do it

For me, there's nothing so satisfying, fulfilling, and honest as putting a smile on someone's face through the fruits of your own labours.

TOOLS YOU DIDN’T KNOW YOU NEEDED

One of my most used tools, an incredibly efficient material remover.

Northwest timber yards, or lack there of.

Thumbs up here for Potters in Nantwich - my local yard. Very obliging, and particularly good for lime, if anyone's into carving.

    Helix Metal Desktop Pencil Sharpener

Beg pardon, Doug - yes it was in fact a bundle which I'd looked at.

    Helix Metal Desktop Pencil Sharpener

Quite impressed by the Pica-dry (I am a sucker for writing implements), but then at £22 it needs to impress. I have a couple of these: They have 2mm leads, a nifty sharpener in the end button, and if you need to mark through a drilled hole in a batten, you can let the lead out to an inch or so...

    Does anyone else dislike routers?

I think routers are a totally marmite tool. People keep telling me I must get one, but so far I've not taken that step. One reason has to be that I've not really needed one, that is to say I could have used one, but I've managed ok without. But then I've only recently bought a scroll saw, and I...

Laser Measure - which one to buy?

I'd definitely go for a Leica Disto - they've been used by Valuation Office surveyors for years. Easy to use, very reliable, and very accurate. Try for a used one on the usual auction site.

    Oh that's neat, Phil.

Looking for recommendations to buy a decent portable/foldable workbench

Don’t know whereabouts you're situated, Fandellos, but on the usual auction site there's a Wolfcraft Master 200 for £38. It's in very good condition, located in Preston. I've had one of these for years - they're simple, effective and really robust. Good luck mate.

    Dremel

I've had a Dremel, which was replaced under guarantee. Unfortunately the replacement soon developed the same problem (very noisy, with much vibration). I now have the Proxxon equivalent, which I would highly recommend. I bought it from Axminster Tools. It is much quieter, with far less...

    proxxon dsh 2 speed

Hi Rayben, I know your post is from ages ago, but I'm thinking of buying a Proxxon scroll saw, and wondered how you are getting on with it. Hope you are well mate. Geoff

    Jet JSS-16 dilemma

Droogs, thank you so much for your guidance. I shall pour myself a dram and have a concentrated watch of this tonight. Cheers, Geoff

    Jet JSS-16 dilemma

Well I've persevered with it (Jet JSS-16), but concluded that it's not for me, despite the fact that I certainly have jobs queuing up. I find it really unpleasant to use - it's really noisy, vibrates badly, and occasionally disconcertingly tries to snatch the workpiece upwards. It's quiet enough...
