    What wood would I want?

The only woods I say no to are willow, eucalyptus and cheap pine. Pretty much any other wood can be turned. Also a lotof wood can be turned green or at least part turned and then left to seaon.. Pete

    waterproofing wooden vases for flowers

I use the plasticote on all my goblets and haven't had any problems yet after a good few years. I even tried it on some saki bowls I di and filled with boiling water and it didn't seem to have any effect. It is also alchohol resistant. Pete

    adapting old chisels

Ordinairy wood working cisels are also on tangs in the handle, a weak point for snapping. As faras being better quality steel maybe that is true of the chap turning tools you can get but not of the new ones. Remember that they are also made from carbon steel which is more brittle as well so...

    New, with a skew...

The skew is probably the most uded tooli have, saying that I have four, all ifferent sizes and the largest get used for roughing out medium to small spindle work though a roughing gouge, as said, is, or should be a part of a turners basic tool kit for larger stuff. The skew doesn't have to be...

    UKIWS? (Woodturning Symposium)

Stop and think for a minute. The average age (according to some sources) of club members is aroubnd 65. Wood turning is not taught in many, if any, state schools and whilst the AWGB does it's best to promote and encourage sessions, training etc for youngsters it is run by a handful of...

    UKIWS? (Woodturning Symposium)

That is the sort of thing we need Graham. As you say. be interesting in the reaction and response from the public. I have done shows at Abingdon and there was certainly interest from people who came. have to remember Iam there to sell things not just talk about wood turning LOL. Saying which I...

    UKIWS? (Woodturning Symposium)

I agree up to a point. I do a have a go session at some of the shows I do and don't have time for all the people who want to try it. The cost of a day at the symposium is not a lot and gives people a chance to see turning in practice and possibly have a go themselves. Anything that can promote...

    UKIWS? (Woodturning Symposium)

That is down to the rest of us Graham. If it is onoly advertised on wood turning forums and pages then I agree but I am sure we all have non turning friends out there and it is up to us to promote our craft not just leave it to the few. As it is no longer taught in state schools or colleges (may...

    UKIWS? (Woodturning Symposium)

I too was initially sceptical but as someone pointed out to me, anything that will spread the word about turning to the non turning fraternity is worth supporting. If we all stand on the suiede lines and wait and seee what happens then wood turning in this country will die of old age. We really...

    Tealight makers dilemma

main problem is that they are a one use t light and, if the ones I have had before are typical, too small to use with other t lights when empty. Happy to be corrected. Pete

    drnking vessel finish

Rustins plasticote. Melamine lacquer can be penetrated by wines fairly quickly. I make a lot of these and the Plasticote is the only one I can guarantee. It is made for kitchen worktops and floors and is liquid proof and alchohol resistant. Been using it for a few years now with no problems. I...

Changing Gears on Union Gradute lathe?

Boy does this bring back memories. I learned to turn on one of these at school and we weren't allowed to change the speed. Such a pain anyway none of us ever tried. Pete

Turning captive rings with a skew

After shaping the rings they are easier to cut free using a sharpened allen key (set in a handle of course) and then the stem of the piece can be taken to an approxiamately similar diameter, and some abrasive attached with double sided tape. You can the sand the inside of the ring(s) Pete

Improving with the skew, a few questions

I have a number of skews as a lot of the work I do is spindle work and using a skew is a lot quicker and easier. I don't personally like the rolled type and mainly use flat ones, half of which are old carbon steel ones that I grind once in a blue moon and hone on a buffing wheel with grinding...
