Split bed rail repair - advice wanted

Actually, I assume it was broken while being loaded as designed. It looks that way but it may already have been a bit of a mess and the normal leading merely extended the existing crack. Either way though, plenty of glue in there now. We'll see how it holds up. I've got it in the house for now...

Split bed rail repair - advice wanted

swb - it was as you noted broken from 'below'. I'd flipped the piece for easier working. I would have tried bending the rail had if not already been glued and clamped by the time I got to reading that. I piled my entire clamp collection in there including some sideways pressure to keep things...

Split bed rail repair - advice wanted

Cheers Pete. I was off out the door to go and buy straws just in case when I saw your reply. nice to know it won't be a wasted trip. :) Thoughts on drill and dowel at the split ends?

Split bed rail repair - advice wanted

Feel free to play a spot-the-ball style game of spot-the-vice with that last shot. That's the next job on my to-do list after this bed. Finish my (rickety old hand-me-down) bench so I can actually work on it properly.

Split bed rail repair - advice wanted

Hi folks. I've got a double bed frame I'm trying to fix up. Nothing amazing, but in generally good condition but for this crack (see pictures). Both splits just apparently disappear into good wood after a short run. I'm calling the main one that breaks the board-edge the primary split and the...

    Workbench squareness

I see what you mean, Andy. The base is - as far as I could get it - square in all the major directions. The top was out of square in the horizontal, so the top edges were not parallel with the top rails. Yaw, in aeronautical terms. Now it's been rotated back that's basically done. That's what...

    Lettering for toolbox (birch ply)

Further thought: Said brand could then become his maker's mark once he's passed his 'apprenticeship'... or just become part of his present.

    Lettering for toolbox (birch ply)

I was just about to suggest branding too. That or some other sort of burning like low-tech pyrography, anyway. Perhaps shallow-carve the initials out of a lump of wood following some nice lettering drawn on first, use an old coathanger (don't inhale the coating - nasty, I imagine) bandsaw blade...

    Workbench squareness

Sold. :) Thanks Andy. So to get back to the original question, because I'm curious about this from a practical point of view... Assuming all other things equal, is there a tangible benefit to having the top and base square to eachother when it comes to the actual working of wood?

    Workbench squareness

It's done. Thanks for the input. To a similar "as close as I'm willing to take it" standard as the base, the top is now square. Level is another matter entirely and as the garage floor slopes quite steeply, this is one I'll ponder before figuring out the best approach. Probably wedges but at...

    Workbench squareness

Is there a particular benefit to a workbench top being square to its base? If planning to use dog holes on bench and vice makes a difference to that question, that's what I'm planning. I've been given a very basic workbench (the most advanced joinery on it is a rebate) which, for now, is where...

    Plywood - edge damage repair?

Thanks all for the input. I just unclamped the repair and it's as good as I need it to be. I'm sure I could have done a better job with a different glue but as it wasn't a repair worth spending much on I decided to stick to the wood glue. Following the suggestions here (particularly Paul's and...

    Plywood - edge damage repair?

Aye, that's a possibility, but I'm not entirely sure the damage is suitable for such an approach. It could well be but if there was a way to get the glue to soak in before clamping it'd save some messing about. Not had much joy beyond a suggestion that it may be thinnable with a small amount of...

    Plywood - edge damage repair?

Can't cut it off. It's not only dimensioned though, it's a finished product that's been damaged. Not so valuable I'd spend a fortune fixing it, but I'd rather fix it than replace it right now.

    Plywood - edge damage repair?

Hi folks, Imagine a bit of plywood with the edge (where you can see the veneers) hit so the wood bulges making the board thicker around the point of impact. The bulge goes about half an inch into the board before it's back to original thickness (and presumably undamaged). That's what I've got...
