    Baby Safe Primers & Paints?

Hi, Any pointers on primers and paints that are safe for use on baby & child toys? Making alphabet blocks and have carved the letters and just need to paint the letters in. Looking at Rustins "Small Job Primer & Undercoat" as says its Toys (Safety) Regulations 1995, BS:EN71 Part 3 compliant...

    Project Desk

Ah sorry, I miss read your previous post... sounds like a nightmare to strip back! There is a fine coat of varnish on the blocks I have, comes off fairly easily with plane or sander though, getting the bitumen off is a mare and a messy job. Project desk is on the back burner for a little while...

Wonder if thats due to the fibers that make up the bamboo, we've got bamboo cutting boards and sharp knives dont touch them!!

    Project Desk

Going to experiment at the weekend. Tried a regular scraper already with no joy. The edge of chisel seems to be very effective to get the worst off and then I think maybe a quick go with a belt sander to buzz the rest off.... we'll see. Also need to figure out the best way to fix the blocks to...

Thi sis similar to the design I'm going to make, the desk will only have a decorative ring around the outer edge not in the middle.

Donor desk bought, £10, this is going to be a bit of a budget project as still learning a lot about woodwork. Only using the top of the desk as a base and the draws will be re-used under my work bench :) Collected the parquets this evening, £0.99!! Unknown wood type but for 99p they had to be...

Excellent, now to get the right parquets now, have my eye on some, just waiting to hear back from the chap. Found a few people with some really nice reclaimed stuff but there seems to be a lack of interest in selling a small amount and having to box it ... they seem happy to put 1sqm on a pallet...

Hmm I give up, tried to reply twice yesterday (a nice long reply too) and it hasn’t posted... annoying! Chems thanks for the info, I'll have a look later when I get a chance and ditto on the thread direction, and my un-posted reply was along the lines of "Thread train derailed". ha ha. I was...

    Project Desk

Hi, I'm looking to make a desk and have a idea for a simple design: It will be approx 120cm long and 80cm wide and around 76cm high. The top will be around 6cm thick (planning to fix reclaimed parquet bloacks to a rigid base) and I think will weigh around 20kg plus objects on the desk; heavy...

    Restoring/Reconditioning A Chest of Draws

Well, two updates, our daughter was born on March 10th and I have finished the chest of draws! I have replaced the top molding/beading with a new hardwood one. The original had been replaced in areas with random bits, so repaired the bottom molding using the top one and bought some hardwood...

    Restoring/Reconditioning A Chest of Draws

I didnt ask though I had thought and assumed this was the reason the draw bottoms in mine were tapered out at the edges: Well, worst draw is nearly finished, just have to add slips to the bottom, there is a couple of inches missing off the top of one of the sides but I have enough salvaged...

    Restoring/Reconditioning A Chest of Draws

I see why this is a bad idea: I think these slips have replaced the originals, they are glued to the draw base which has split in the middle. Bit of a learning curve this, perhaps I should change the title to Patching up a chest of draw, I think the title is a little deceiving to forum...

    Restoring/Reconditioning A Chest of Draws

True I guess, monkey see, monkey do. Mine dont have any screws holding the bottoms in place, they do however have nice strong glue holding the old slides in place and its proving a bit of a mare to get them off ... but I've worked out a way and its going ok so far... well, one draw is...

    Restoring/Reconditioning A Chest of Draws

I wonder if books work on the basis that your operating in the perfect text environment, kiln dried timber aclimatised in a warm low humidity workshop/environment? Hmmm, humidity. Now my chest is stronger I've been able to move it in to the garage to carry out the rest of the work, its been...
