That looks so exactly like an ordinary UK plane, I wonder if it was made by a UK maker, marked with the customer's name? I've not tried searching for the company, but making "own brand" planes for hardware or tool stores was pretty common.

It does like a UK made plane Andy. Any one out there with the Rees plane book to look up Novil Russell & Co?

Yes, I have, but it's BRITISH Planemakers!
Afaik there is no equivalent for South Africa.
I still think it was made nearer to Huddersfield than Cape Town and either never made it onto the boat or was brought home again by an ex-pat.

I wonder if the word "Barchfield" helps with finding out more about this plane? It is stamped after the makers name, but within a plane border.

I'd assume that was the owner's name, in the tiny bit of space left.
It's certainly unusual, having a brand name spread over four separate stamps like that.
