Saw sharpening

Afternoon all,

I have a Veritas Dovetail saw, which I've used a fair bit and could use a bit of a tune up (in terms of sharpening). As I want the saw to be in tip-top condition for fine work, I don't want to try sharpening it myself (my saw sharpening experience is null!)

I'm therefore looking for recommendations of a saw doctor (don't mind if its somebody I have to post the saw to) who can do a first class job of sharpening for me. Ideally, I want somebody who specialises more in sharpening hand saws and will understand that I'll want minimum set on the saw (as per what it has now).

Any names?

Axminster used to do a postal service, but I don't know if they still do it. Might be worth asking. Not too difficult to do yourself though.

There always seems to be a lot of trepidation about sharpening saws, which in reality is very easy. With the Saw you have that hasn't been sharpened before the task is really simple. Looking at the potential downside and you mess it up, it can then be sharpened professionally. No matter how badly you mess up, the price to sharpen a Saw will normally be the same. Once you've tried it and mastered the technique you will keep your saws tuned up and never experience using a blunt Saw again.

Skelton saws do a re-sharpening service I believe, he makes his own saws which are beautiful and really nicely sharpened.

go to a local joiners workshop and ask ware he sends his saw blades for sharpening as they will also sharpen handsaws or be cheeky and ask the local joiner to teach you or come to me and i will teach you a lifetime skill.

I get all my saw blades and router cutters sharpened by North London Saws in Waltham Cross. They will sharpen hand saws and do a mail order service. I've never actually had a hand saw sharpened by them as I do my own, but they are pretty good with my other cutty stuff. I'm sure you could discuss the set, rake etc. with them on the phone
