Just a thought - anyone doing any amount of intarsia would be well suited by turner's offcuts, surely? Many turners use some quite exotic timbers and consign the offcuts to the bin or the stove. I know at our club it gets taken for firewood or it gets dumped. A 15kg sack can be sent for about a tenner - it could be worth asking around, surely, especially if you haven't easy access to hardwoods? Admittedly most of it will be a limited number of species, but turners don't tend to use uninteresting stuff by choice.
