Hi good people of UKW,

I need your help once more! I will be in the UK soon and this time we are going by car from London to Bridgewater to see family and show my good lady wife some of the prettier countryside.

As I am there I have the opportunity to pick up some bits and pieces and I wondered if you could point me in the direction of the better shops for the following:

I need some jigs for my Tormek wet stone. Are there any dealers down that way (I know I could use the web to look em up but I guess recommendation is better)?

I could do with a decent grinding jig too, any idea's?

Bowl blanks are always good as well as centre blanks. Pointers on wood merchants would be gratefully received.

Finally I want to replace my Racal respirator. Where can I buy the Airlite?

I know its a big list but I thought I would ask before looking them up in Google. Cheers guys and gals,

Mick

Just a couple of suggestions to startwith. D&M Tools in Twickenham is probably a good place for Tormek jigs. They are not too far from the M25 and a couple of junctions around from the M4 so easy to get to Somerset from there.

I am not a turner but Yandles in Martock not that far away (a pleasent drive over the Polden Hills) and might be able to help with the turning blanks.

Can't help with the Airshield though.

Andrew

Wow, you are only going to be a stones throw from Axminster*

Get over to the shop for a nosey round!

Adam

Presuming you mean bridgewater nr. Taunton?

Hi Andrew,

Brilliant mate. I gave Yandles a call and they have everything I need! Respirators, Tormek stuff, Sorby jigs etc. Nice tip, thanks.

Axminster! I couldnt think of the name before. I'll go and check them out and give them a call too as I do indeed mean that Bridgewater. Thanks Adam

Just looked at site and called:
I cant wait to go now. They stock a load of stuff eh? Look out credit card, you are going to get a really good spanking!!!

That was the assumption I made even if Bridgewater with an E is the canal oop Narth and Bridgwater without the E is a town in Somerest. ;-)

(Who was brunged up in them parts)

Hi Mick,

I use the Sorby jig for my turning tools and find it excellent.
Think you'll find that the 'Airlite' is now defunct. The Trend Airshield, of better design, is its replacement (about £150).

Yandles? Axminster PTC? Blimey, your shopping list is going to extend somewhat! Hope you have a large car - if not, hire a van...........   Have a good trip both of you.

Cheers,

Trev.

Yandles are good tool merchants, but principally timber orientated.

Axminster are a half hour drive away (across country- no main roads unfortunately) but have a much bigger selection of specialised tools, more so than Yandles.
Axminster don't have as big a selection of wood as Yandles.
Horse for courses.
They are both worth a visit.
If you are driving from the Hoek to Essex - and around the top half of the M25, consider Tilgear in Potter's Bar. No web presence, but address is

Just a thought Mick, if you want to take the mail order route and use a UK address and get your stuff delivered to one of us in the south near where you will be then you can always take that option, i don't mind playing post office for you

Thanks Argus. I think I might visit both to be honest as I have the time to tour around for a few days and the wife said I'm allowed  We are coming in via Dover this time as I want to visit a mate in Deal so the M25 is not an option really. Not to worry as I think the other two have enough for this trip.

Tony, thanks for the offer of playing Pat but I dont think its necessary this time. I'll bear it in mind if I may though as most UK suppliers dont send things to Holland and a UK address could come in handy

Thanks again guys and I'll let you know what the wife let me buy when I get home.

Mick:

I think I'm right in saying that Axminster power tools have an unrivalled selection of tools and equipment with a whole shop devoted to turners.

Axminster is a small town, close to Honiton, which is a fine old market town with a history of lace making and if you have the time - go to Lyme Regis. Only 10 km away with terrific beach walking with lots of fossils in situ.

Enjoy your trip to Devon, because this is one of the finest parts of the UK.
