These could be made simply out of ply and blocks. You could make the gaps different to suit different width timber

Fair enough. I just thought they looked like the sort of thing useful enough to find a place in my biscuit tin for odds and sods.
 
For the money I think they are a good idea. We can all make alternatives ourselves but the reality is that I for one will tend to make do rather than stop off a project to make a proper solution
 
I do similar with lengths of scrap wood. My main bench doesn't have dog holes, so if needed i'll clamp to the edge of the bench. I have a few that have been made true and surfaced with clear packing tape for glue-ups, but most are just scrap and considered sacrificial to whatever tool is operating above.
