I doubt if I have invented it, but I needed a simple way of having a bench planing stop, preferably one I could use in conjunction with my vice.
I have got an old Woden screw raise type, but I didn't want all the hassle of letting it in, so I have improvised using an off cut of 50 x 6 f/b (other size flat bars are available).
I ground a downward facing edge on the long and the short legs so I can have the choice of length of 'blade' displayed, popped it into the vice and it seems to work fine.
A nice open corner weld gives a perfectly square inner face for the vice, but you could bend one if you don't mind the extra height.
Finish to suit your taste, but mine took ten minutes, start to finish

nice simple approach.
I have something like a bench hook but longer with a stop to the side instead of the back, the stop is a scrap of wood that's glued on, if it's to thick it gets planed down, if I wan't it thicker it gets knocked off and replaced.
