For those of you that install your products, what type of insurance do you have, what is the typical cost and what does it cover?

Does it also cover your products e.g. if someone hurts themselves on something you have supplied?

Never really thought about it, always presumed my public liability insurance covers it, think my joinery business insurance is about £250 a year with AXA, that also covers my tools etc.

It would be worth contacting a specialist insurance broker and telling them precisely what you require. There is no point imagining that all policies cover the same public liability and product liability issues.

I have £2M Public Liability insurance, some customers ask for £5M. Costs vary and limitations vary depending on what you do: electrics, plumbing, structural, if you use heat and the type of buildings. PL insurance covers for accidental damage to the customers and their premises. If you are doing design work or making recommendations that could lead to claims if the advice/design is wrong you would need Professional Indemnity Insurance.

I have Products Liability for what we make and Public Liability for what we do.

My Public Liability states my make and fit furniture and kitchens, it does have a couple of exclusions, one being we are not allowed to do electrics, and the other being not allowed to do plumbing.

This suits me as I have a good on call plumber and 2 electricians depending on which country I am working in. ( Scotland and England)

A lot of public liability policies have the electric and water exclusions, it is worth checking.

Never heard of Product liability insurance so had a mini panic and thought more expense, called AXA and was pleasantly surprised to be told I already have it included in my policy.

I think a lot of commercial policys include it now.
My insurance has since 2005, and have changed companies a couple of times since them.
I would check if you are fitting kitchens and are doing the plumbing that you are covered though.
This was slipped into my policy about 4 years ago.
