is there any reason not to put fridge in corner of kitchen?
that space that needs a magic corner cupboard is a PITA
I know there would be wasted space but we have that spare

Contrary to the implication in the question, there are usually very good reasons for siting the FF in the corner of the room. Breaking up worktops into short sections is a bad idea in design terms, and positioned anywhere other that at an end of a run this is precisely what the FF does.

Would be fine, in fact probably better ventilated than is the normal position.
I have run a fridge freezer in this location for several years with absolutely no problem, its sandwiched between a room corner and a Floor to ceiling carcase with a built in oven, the opposite side of which my worktop starts. Certainly the best use for us of an average size kitchen.
