How do all,

I am to be replacing a beam in a small porch that has more or less completely rotted away.

On inspection, it seems to be the only part of the porch to have suffered, though who knows what can of worms removing it will uncover.

Ill support the two sides of the porch, and was going to build a temporary tie around the two posts to make sure they cant splay or do anything untoward. Then chop out the rotten old fluff and replace it with a length of oak, tieing it back in to the structure in as many good ways as seem available.... i guess this is the bit that worries me, tieing it back in, as i dont know what im going to have to tie it back into...

Not done one before so just thought id see if anyone had any words of wisdom or pointers... Cheers!

It has obviously worked as a tie beam, so uncover it carefully, work out how it was/ is joined, and replicate that. You'll be fine.
