Nails

I want to make some "rustic" stuff.

Fruit storage trays
Fruit boxes
Gardeners trugs etc

I am a glue and screw man and rarely use nails
The cheap bright nails (ovals, rounds) I have in abundance but think the simple butt joints I am planning will just fall apart.

I can see cheap large (2") cut nails but not small (1") ones.
I had in mind a smaller version of horse shoe nails, but the only ones I can see are more expensive than best brass slot screws :roll:

Horseshoe nails don't go down as small as 1 inch. IIRC E1s are about 40mm length.

How about rosehead?

Not the cheapest though.
I made a few crates and a trug & used stainless screws.

They do look quite shiny but at least they hold well.

The other batch I made for the garden I used clout nails.

They were definitely the cheapest option.

That's just the stuff I wanted to make....... but avoiding the screws
I had seen roseheads and they would be ideal but as you say, they ain't cheap or I cant find them cheap.
Clout nails put apart and anyway I wanted to be a bit "arty farty".

If you want really nice, rose head, square shank nails, there's one company in France still making them on C19th machines.
In the UK you can get small quantities from "Objects of Use" in Oxford who also do mail order.

They're obviously not as cheap as ordinary nails from a builder's merchant but good for a special project. I bought some for a decoratively nailed box and thought they were good. Plenty more info at Chris Schwarz's blog.

I had considered this as the 50mm are dirt cheap.
I might get the angle grinder out and cut a pile to experiment with.
I can "see" 30mm ones but they are 25kg minimum :lol:

I recently shortened a batch by putting them in the vice (mechanic's vice, that is), and bending them back and forth until they snapped with fatigue. Didn't take much effort.

Sadly, no, at least with the smallest size, in my experience. I did try to clench some but they just snapped. I had to use my small stock of old, salvaged cut iron nails instead, where I wanted a clenched joint.
