I'm making a door for the first time. We have an odd size rear inner door which I really need to keep the same size. Looking at the frame it's 840mm. This may sound a stupid question but how wide should I make the door? I don't want loads of planing after but also don't want it to look very gappy. I was thinking maybe 837mm?
Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

That's not an odd size. That's perfectly standard. It is an 838 door, or 33" in old money. Standard off-the-shelf item.

To answer your question, make it 1 or 2 mm undersize of the biggest dimensions (you'll find the width varies), then plane down. It really is the only way to get it to fit properly. You should end up with a gap somewhere around a 2p coin in width all round. If you can fit a £1.00 coin in anywhere you've stuffed up badly!

Cheers Mike

What I should have said was it's about a 30cm taller than any 838 doors I've seen.

Something to work with now, thanks.
