Hi Chaps

I finished this recently and finally decided to photograph it, which ended up with the help of a few sheets for a background and one at the window to soften the light quite a task.

Its all quarter sawn oak from a pile I was given.

The base is the sink hole from my kitchen, I routed a grove in it and the lamp base for a lazy Susan using marbles, a 10mm bolt holds the base together.

I bought a cheap foot switch from Wilcos and turned a knob and cover for it I wired it all up with some nice brown cloth covered cable.

The arm pivot was made from some oak that a drilled, glued together and turned to 50mm diameter, the tricky bit was cutting it I hot-melt glued a square of MDF to each end then cut it on my chop saw to a 90 degree point, then I had to work out how long each piece had to be. Its 110mm between the uprights and the oak in the arm is 20mm thick, I was scratching my head for a while then Mr Pythagoras decided to help turns out that the square root of 20 squared times two is 28 so I needed 41mm lengths.

The last disk on the counter weight unscrews to reveal some big bits of steel used to balance the arm I can remove or add weight if I swap the lamp, it has a 2.4 watt LED lamp in which runs very cool, the globe is from an Ikea lamp which I cut up to get its bayonet mount.

It also has a face.

Very smart, it looks great ! The wooden switch is a nice touch.

That looks great Pete. I've had something quite similar brewing in my head for ages but never quite got round to it, I like the counter weight idea.

Hugely impressive.

There's masses to admire, but I'll point to just one thing, that on/off switch, it's inspired!

=D>

Thanks chaps.

It had been floating around my head for some time, the arm was going to be two parallel arms like the upright but they warped after I machined them so i made it X shaped to straighten the wood out.

Missed this first time around. That's outstanding. Fair play to you Pete. Very sharp. A true one off. If you have any build photos, I'd be happy to see them. I'm intrigued as to the mechanics of it as much as the exemplary finish.

Thanks Bm101.

No wip pictures I am afraid, it's just simple m&t joints cut with a router or mallet and chisel.
The counter weights are cut using a template and bearing guided cutter.
All the surfaces where scraped before 3 coats of danish oil, sanded with a scotchbrite pad between coats.

What a wonderful bit of design and execution!

I daren't think what that would cost if it were to appear in one or two specialist lamp shops I've seen.
