I am just about to varnish quite a few pine doors and skirtings, unfortunately the joiners have left the timber in a bit of a state with dirty finger marks etc. Sanding is quite successful but time consuming. I remember reading some time ago how to clean surface marks off timber, but cant remember how it is done.
Can anyone out there shed some light on this?

Kelpie,

I can't really generalise but I use a pencil eraser and white spirits for both pencil lines and other marks. I find that if I clean with these before sanding, it needs much less effort/wood removal to get the surface clean. Occasionally, I may need to use a scraper for stubborn marks.
