My late father in law was an accomplished woodworker. His ashes will soon be buried and my wife asked if I would make a casket out of some of the left over timber in his woodshed. I found some 1 inch planks of oak. Studying the timber and mulling over what to do, I decided to keep it simple and it seemed appropriate to leave the finish of the oak as I found it. The raw, tactile surface, straight from the sawmill bandsaw and aged through seasoning and storage would have been how he would have known and handled the timber. I just ripped the board through in half, cut it to size and fitted it together with a few small dominoes. I'll tack the lid on once the ashes are inside. The box is about 9 inches square and 7 high.
