Really appreciate this help.
Fortunately I don't need building control. It's more because I live in a conservation area and they are very fussy about any construction work at all.

Hadn't really appreciated how complex the issue was with all this, and I really appreciate the time you've given already. I certainly wasn't trying to circumvent getting paid-for professional advice.

My main concern is that I build something that'll work. Looking at cedar greenhouses online, they all seem less substantial, but then I can't see all the details.

I see what you mean about the steel in compression. Timber will work fine (I'll have to think about how to attach it to the wall, but that's another issue). I've now got to bite the bullet and spend some cash on materials and commit some time to the project. Fortunately I am time rich and my workshop is 4 metres from the site.
