    Workshop Build - 5m x 3m

UPDATE #5 Nearly there! The roof set me back quite a bit, swapping the 4x2 to 6x2's. During this time we also decided we might as well put a skylight in there so, seeing as this is a 3m span I thought it would be a good experience to build a few flitch beams to support the skylight either side...

Finishing shed cladding - Gap or no gap at base for cedar cladding

My floor is laid on brick so I have approx 70mm gap. How far should the cladding go down? To the concrete base with approx 10-20mm gap but then the bottom of cedar will be quite damp from rain drops etc Leave the full 70 mm gap, less chance of cedar getting wet, also more chance of rodents...

    Pent roof workshop/shed planning

currently building mine (you can see my progress on my thread) Im using 18mm OSB for inside and outside sheathing, probably could have gotten away with thinner but there was much price difference where I am, also like that I can mount storage anywhere on the inside with the OSB Ill be doing a...

    Workshop Build - 5m x 3m

UPDATE #4 Walls and roof framed and sheathed, this was a bit of a task getting this erected by myself. I'm glad I split the 5m wall into 2 sections because lifting it and moving it into position by myself would have been impossible. I stupidly built the walls in the wrong order when stacking...

    UK Drills?

Have used them a few times (buying through ebay) and their quality is ok if you just need to put a hole in something but I found they didnt produce the cleanest holes after a few uses so I decided to invest in a Dormer A100 Jobber set and they are much better (as you would expect). You can pick...

    3m flat roof span with 44 × 95 joists

Thankyou everyone for the advice. I have decided to redo the roof with 6x2 joists (just took delivery today) and take the roof up an extra 2 inches (this will take me 50mm over my planning permission but i doubt anyone will notice). My plan: Install 6x2 joists, 400mm spacing Double up the 6x2...

    3m flat roof span with 44 × 95 joists

Yes thats a possible solution, and very similar to joist plates I've seen online That's a good idea, but would make installing roof insulation a bit of a hassle That was my Dad's reaction too, and I get that they are covering their a** but he didnt like any of the other ideas I suggested...

    3m flat roof span with 44 × 95 joists

I've just spoken to a structural engineer and they advised using 7"x2". I'm tempted to just rip out the roof and start again with 6x2 or 7x2 and lose some headroom internally, and go a little over my total external height I looked at those, very interesting never seen them before, but to cover...

    3m flat roof span with 44 × 95 joists

Thanks, I don't drive so I usually have to stick with the online stores that offer delivery. Local builder/steel merchants are usually cheaper than the online stores but I always find you either have to pickup or their delivery options are far too expensive Unfortunately, I cannot add any...

    3m flat roof span with 44 × 95 joists

I hit my head on far too many things while doing DIY in my small shed and utility room, I managed to give myself a concussion a few months back after one incident, I'm fed up with everything in my house being too short so when building this new shed I decided from the start that headroom is THE...

    3m flat roof span with 44 × 95 joists

You're not being harsh, i appreciate your views 👍 I was building over xmas so couldn't get anymore timber sadly. I wanted to get a roof on because of the weather, but I agree, I think I've gone about it the wrong way and didnt realise 3M span is actually quite a lot for 4x2 timber. I'm now...

    3m flat roof span with 44 × 95 joists

Looking at span tables; C24 @ 44 × 95 will give me just under a 2M span. My flat roof is at a 2-degree slope and spanning 3M. I don't want to use 5" or 6" joists because it will take up too much head space in my shed. I've already put in the roof joists and OSB and walking on seems pretty...

    Workshop Build - 5m x 3m

I haven't noticed any bounce while walking on the unsupported edges, if it gets bad I guess I can just lay some 12mm T&G flooring over the 18mm plywood. Feel free to ask any questions 👍

    Workshop Build - 5m x 3m

    Workshop Build - 5m x 3m

i run a small youtube channel and need the extra space filming and working on projects, that's the reason for building the shed. this build will also be in a video series on the channel too 👍 Thanks for the reassurance. The floor, walls, and roof are all made from 4x2 C24 Timber.

    Workshop Build - 5m x 3m

Ill just have to make sure the heavy machinery is sitting on the joists as best as possible, or just lay an extra sheet when I get a mill/lathe in there. I'd like to avoid losing any height in the shed (its becoming more like a garden room/cabin now) another 18mm osb on top of what I have gets...

    Workshop Build - 5m x 3m

Hi Ian, the plywood sheets are all support at their ends on the joists. Do you mean the longest sides of the sheets should also be supported?

    Workshop Build - 5m x 3m

UPDATE #3 Lintels laid, had to use steel shims because the variation between highest and lowest point was 40mm, I didn't have enough shims to prop up all the lintels so just laid a few shims and then mortar on top to give it a bit of support. Cant see in the pic but I cut and laid DPC on each...
