What kind of woodworker are you?

Butterfly! Happy to have a go at anything but not seriously skilled at anything. Wishing there were more hours in the day.

    Lets see your wood

Another future project is a simple console table with stick legs. I lifted the crown on a copper beech earlier in the year. The bark was removed within 24 hours and the sticks look really interesting, but not sure how long they need to dry out for. With so many things ongoing it probably won’t...

    Lets see your wood

So I took Stig’s advice and split my cherry log in 2. Cut it roughy into rounds that would fit on the lathe, but clearly unbalanced so nearly shook the workshop apart! Far too scary so stopped. The wood is pretty though… I’ve sealed them with PVA but wondering why they should be stored in...

    Lets see your wood

Nowhere near as nice as that bit of oak Stig, but a neighbour has given me this. I can hardly lift it but it’s crying out to be made into something. Anyone got any ideas? It's some form of ornamental cherry. It was cut down last year. I think. Any suggestions welcomed!

As spalted wood is sometimes a bit soft in parts, would clear penetrating epoxy be an option? It needs UV protection I recall but makes a good base for yacht varnish. The ultimate varnish would be a 2 part product, if you don't like a high gloss it can be knocked back with fine wire wool. An...

    Sold Workshop Downsizing - Titan-Pro 7ton Log-splitter

Hi Ollie - I hope Brian will include a health warning. I really love splitting logs but have developed a worrying disease since having my machine. I am seeing beautiful pieces all the time and keep ‘putting them aside’ rather than replenishing the fuel store. Enjoy!

Retirement workshop - which machines to buy?

After advice from Inspector and the gang from this forum, thank you, I went down the road of installed ducting (6” with 4” tee offs) along the whole workshop. The cyclone machine is outside but under cover and screened for noise and from prying eyes. I’m just a hobbyist and am retired and can...

    Boiled Linseed Oil

Maybe not for your chopping boards, but I use BLO for various handles and a very occasional wipe I’ve only workbench. I keep a yellow kitchen wash sponge (the sort with a bit of green scotchbrite) with the bottle and it’s always ready for use. Never seen or felt it get hot but maybe I should...

Prior planning…. My small trowel got left out in the garden and I found it in the compost heap. Of course the handle had mostly rotted away. I have a second-hand lathe, first project was a replacement handle so the pair are together again. I haven’t done much turning but I’ve occasionally been...

    Need to escape/reset

My heart goes out to you Stig. Definitely agree with the need for sharing a burden. Some really great suggestions for help here - I hope you find the right one (or more) and can take positive steps. The break will surely do some good? All the best mate and do keep us briefed. And don’t hold...

Nothing exotic but took me ages to do. A simple plinth for my coffee machine with a serving tray underneath. All made from offcuts. For the amount of work involved, I wish I'd gone and bought some better timber. But at least the tray is light! After the worktop was templated, I asked them to...
