    CNC Machine

Yes, I am definitely building a CNC controller

    CNC Machine

Progress report… well, I made the box :) I knocked it up out of Wickes plywood, which delaminated so much that I decided to wrap it in sticky back plastic (wrapping credit to wife!) Once done, it looked so much like a piece of audio equipment that I couldn’t resist 3d printing the Marshall...

    CNC Machine

Dial indicators seem to mate and breed in my shed. The current plan is to get a bed laser-cut in steel to give it some decent rigidity. The current bed is less flimsy than I expected , but still too flimsy. I’m sure I can find a way to level it, but at first at least I’m just wanting to rout...

    CNC Machine

The bed turned up this afternoon. Again, it seems very solid and well made. I will have to replace the top with a steel plate for reliably cutting metal, but I factored that in. TBH I didn’t expect it to be assembled - I expected a bag of bits. Result then. I’d better get it out of the living...

    CNC Machine

I’ve unpacked the boxes, here are the main ingredients for the CNC router. Clockwise from bottom left… DDCS V3.1 CNC controller. Rightly or wrongly, I opted for a standalone CNC controller, rather than using a computer. We’ll have to see how it works out. I guess my only complaints is the...

    CNC Machine

A while back I asked in the CNC forum for some advice etc on building or buying a CNC router. In the end I bought a bunch of Chinese bits from Rattmmotor (eBay) and they turned up today. The goal of this is to be able to cut out plane blades from tool steel, plus engrave brass for bits for all...

    Faded japaning.

I bought the stuff for japanning some time ago - lamp black, turps and stuff. I never got around to it - It’s still on my list of things to try. Regardless, I don’t know if the Record blue was japanned on to Record planes, or if it’s enamel paint. I can vouch for the Paragon paints, I’ve done...

Who made this TYZACK panel plane?

Indeed, I’m just pointing out that the OPs question isn’t such a stupid question, it may well be that his infill plane came from a factory somewhere that may have possibly been Preston or Norris (or more likely a small toolmaker shop somewhere ). It looks pretty decent quality.

Who made this TYZACK panel plane?

Tyzack went through several iterations and often resold products from other manufacturers under their own brand. I have a Tyzack rabbet plane, a Tyzack saw, my dodgy old table saw is Tyzack Zyto branded, and also my metal lathe. I think I have a Tyzack screwdriver somewhere too.

    Side bead dimensions?

Hi Andy, sorry, I have been offline for a few days. I think that last picture is exactly what I need! That’s incredibly helpful, thank you very much. It’s interesting that the overall width does not vary much, even though the bead size is markedly different. So for a full set there should be…...

    Side bead dimensions?

That would be great if you could Andy. Here are a few pics to illustrate the problem…. First a 3/4” and 3/8” together Then two 3/8” beads from two different manufacturers!! (stamps not clear). The top plane is almost 50% wider than the bottom for the same bead size. Then a table that...

    Side bead dimensions?

Does anyone happen to have a set of side bead planes? I am looking for some measurements. I have a few, but they are all from different manufacturers and have different layouts. The actual bead itself is pretty clear, it’s usually a half circle of the diameter advertised on the plane. It’s the...

How do I lubricate and clean Diamond Sharpening Stones?

For what it’s worth, and maybe interest …. I’ve done a fair bit of scraping to get things “bonkers flat” as an earlier poster put it. It is indeed the holy grail of flatness. I’ve never done it on a plane sole, no reason it can’t be done but it isn’t necessary. Scraping starts where lapping...

    Which CNC Router?

A couple of questions for anyone, who’s reading…. Does anybody know of a good UK CNC Builders forum or Facebook group, where I might be able to get some general advice if I’m going to build one of these? Has anybody tried buying from eBay and importing from Germany? The supplier swears blind...

    Which CNC Router?

Well….. after loads of reading and watching YouTube videos, I think I’ve worked out the best way to go if I want to mill metal. It’s to get a Chinese 6040 frame with linear rails and ball screws…. Frame Then some closed loop motors …… Motors A controller …. Controller And a spindle …...

    Which CNC Router?

I tried looking for a second hand one and I found a Sodastream 🙁

    Which CNC Router?

I would say that mostly I’m looking to process 10” x 18” flat stock or something like that - typically up to 1/8” thick, routing shapes into it. If you imagine a whole bunch of plane blades laid out on a flat piece of metal, cut out with a router leaving dressups. Then I’d grind the taper on...

    Which CNC Router?

    >>>I don`t know much about metal milling but you may need a spindle with a lower speed higher torque than is commonly supplied. That’s an interesting topic. On my manual horizontal mill, I ended up replacing the motor with a 10-pole motor that could deliver low rpm high torque. VFDs can’t do...

    Which CNC Router?

2nd machine , Z axis does look flimsy, but the machine is a third of the price of machine one! All for me to upgrade that isn’t a problem. And it’s in London rather than Liverpool, which is definitely a bonus for me. All of those 6040 machines that I can see have warnings in their descriptions...
