Thanks for your comments. Regards the dowel width, I've some old curtain poles and my boy prefers 32mm in tests.. Thanks for the link to toolsandtimber; the bars in oak work out about £2 each, which is ok. What about the frame material? I cannot afford hardwood so thought Western Red Cedar...

Will the untreated oak remain stable or absorb too much water and cup/twist? Mantel is 2" thick.. Otherwise good idea to clean-up after the plaster and treat then.

What oil for oak mantel to protect and retain natural colour

It's seasoned oak. Once fitted to the fireplace the surrounding wall is going to be rendered+plastered, so thinking I best apply some form of protection before that (watery) works..

advice on MR MDF sheet stock

Thanks Will. Based on this I went back to my local B&Q and you are correct. They are selling Medite (Trade?) MDF sheets. Right now they have an offer of £19.74 for 3 or more sheets, which is a good price and their cutting service is handy too..

    Bedroom wardrobe drawers

Ok, thanks so far guys :) Drawer boxes will be 700 & 500mm wide, 500mm deep, 140mm high. I'm thinking 12mm birch plywood. Is 18mm overkill for simple wardrobe boxes?

I've a circular saw, mitre saw, few planes and hand saws.. Was thinking about purchasing a track saw so that might be an option.. If making plywood boxes, how best to secure the drawer bottom? Cutting a dado using a track saw appears time consuming so perhaps I'd also need to purchase a...
