"You will get on with the decorating while I'm away, won't you?"

Said my wife before she left for a weekend away. This is what she meant, right? Had to take advantage of a rare dry and sunny weekend here in Wales! Had been needing to get this done for a few months! All oak. Funny thing is I don't even have a lathe (yet)!! 😂 Just planning for the future, ha!

    Need to escape/reset

Jeeze Stig, oh dear, a bit of a mess. There has been some very good advice on previous posts so I'll try and not go over old ground. YOU have made the hardest first step by "talking" about what's bothering you, albeit through a forum with (probably) strangers. I empathise with you. During...

Anyone out there with a chainsaw mill and near the Beacon Beacons?

@mock ha ha! It's a couple of acres and as I'm a fellow detectorist I've gone over most of it already. Found a couple of interesting items; a small hawking whistle where an old footbridge crossed a stream from us to a neighbouring farm and an 1854 2 centime coin that'd been worn as a necklace...

Anyone out there with a chainsaw mill and near the Beacon Beacons?

Had a large ash tree come down in the garden a few weeks ago and although it would be good for firewood it seems a shame not to be able to mill (some) of it. I have a couple of chainsaws but my biggest bar is only 18"... Anyone out there near the Brecon Beacons with an Alaskan chainsaw mill...

Good not too expensive laser level ?

Same here as per TomGW. Not something I'll be using very often, only home DIY so couldn't justify spending a lot. Been happy with it so far, still on original AA after several hours use. Does what I needed it for! 👍🏻

    Workbench finishing

My workbench top is 18mm MDF (on top of 18mm ply) - designed to be replaceable if/when needed. I've only ever applied regular beeswax every now and then, any glue spills etc come off easy... Only a hobbyist sawdust maker and other than a few drill holes/saw cuts the top is still in pretty good...

    Filling holes in oak

Evening all I picked up an oak dresser at an auction which I plan to refurbish. There are 5 small drilled holes in the top (see photos, pencil for scale) which I'd like to fill before a finish coat but I'm not sure what to use to a) match the wood and b) be compatible with the final finish...

Post a photo of the last thing you made

It's all wrapped in a tarp now and sat on a pallet to slow the drying...

Post a photo of the last thing you made

Acquired a large pile of oak logs and rounds. I couldn't bring myself to cut it all up into firewood so have turned a load of it into wood turning blanks. Funny thing is...I don't even own a lathe! .....Yet!! Ha!

    Workshop lighting advice

Hi all, hoping to tap into the collective knowledge and experience here..... I'm blessed with having a large workshop, circa 15m X 5m, ceiling height varying from 2-4m, to play in. It also doubles as storage for all the sh@te that you'd normally hide away in your loft 'cos we don't have a loft...

    Stanley No.5 plane spare parts

Thanks for the replies guys and especially that a No.4 is the same - there's far more results on the 'Bay for No.4's than 5's so I'm confident I'll find a cap-iron now. Cheers, Neil

    Stanley No.5 plane spare parts

Hi, I'm after a chip breaker for a Stanley No.5 plane, 2" model. Can anyone point me to somewhere that sells them? I can find lever caps, handles, irons etc but no chip breakers anywhere! Thanks in advance Neil

    Another bandsaw question!

Bob, Malcolm, thanks for your comments. The million dollar Q - what do I plan to cut? - I've recently started trying my hand at spoon carving and hand carving small bowls so preparing blanks and trimming waste. I have a good supply of logs, up to 12" diameter available but can always use my...

    Another bandsaw question!

Hi folks, Yet another bandsaw question, sorry! Just getting into woodworking as a hobby though have been doing diy for many years. Initially I was thinking of getting a basic 'hobby' bandsaw but after reading many threads I'm leaning towards the Record BS350. Quite a bit more than I planned on...
