Strip planking a canoe. Any experience? Ideas? Costs?

I had a dude in the workshop building his own strip plank canoe, you'll be several hundred pounds in strips (he got his machined by robbins with a bead and butt, he hasn't told me what the final price was but I assume £500+), unless you've got cheap wood already available and machines and space...

    Uses of Idigbo

I've used it for allsorts, got a mallet made out of idigbo, made some small pieces of jewellery amongst other things. Whilst it may not like paint it absolutely drinks up steel wool and vinegar ebonising mixture and takes the black stain beautifully. If you are looking for a finish that works...

It’s chisel time! Chisel me timbers! Your fav chisels!

Buy a set for hitting with hammers, Wilko's essentials have a pretty nasty looking yellow plastic handles but they hold a decent edge, they cost about a tenner but in my eyes they are as good as anything else made specifically for site/rough work. https://www.wilko.com/en-uk/wilko-wood- ...

First time wood project - looking for advice.

Hi there well done on deciding to get into wood-working. I'd start by saying that cutting box joints by hand is pretty much exactly as difficult as cutting dovetails, it might actually be more difficult to execute well, sort of sloppy hand cut dovetails look alright but sort of sloppy box...

    Millers Falls jointed lever cap

If they were more common and less expensive in the UK I'd probably go for the full set, not because of the cap iron but they are much lighter planes than records and stanleys it might only be a few hundred grams of casting but it makes a difference to your arms on longer jobs. Love MF planes...

    rider 311 clone

Axminsters outlet on ebay sell "seconds" at about £35-50 on average and almost always have them in stock, which does not instil confidence in any way shape or form, they must get a LOT of duds.

    What wood for teaching?

I've taught myself a lot using reasonably cheap poplar. https://imgur.com/gallery/IfRV2 I think it can be pretty, just oiled and waxed.

    Help Fixing Beginner Problems?

I've had a shot on a couple of Rider planes recently, nice heavy castings if you like that sort of thing, but terrible cap irons, horrible, horrible cap irons. https://www.tooltique.co.uk/shop/vintag ... dy-to-use/ Tooltique are a good trade off between buying blind on ebay and buying new...

    Mens Sheds

It's good to hear a variety of opinions on the topic and I think I've gotten a few different perspectives on the efficacy of mens sheds and the necessity for a tailored solution and a bit of understanding about the reason for it. I don't think the position I'm applying for would have the...

    Mens Sheds

I think I'd rather see a community workshop that caters to everyone with specific clubs on different days that cater towards different demographics and crafts so I'd rather see a mens club as something that exists within a larger community organisation.

    Mens Sheds

One of the responsibilities in a job I'm currently applying for is helping to establish a mens shed, now I'm all for helping isolated individuals but I can't help feeling that a mens shed isn't the way to fix that. Normally if I speak to a local man whose struggling to find stuff to do I'll push...

    Accurate representation?

I bought the dirt cheap B and Q MacAllister pillar drill on sale a bit ago because it included a small vice (which I have used once in total) and I have to say I'd rather have the Record Power even after that performance. It's a lot quieter less rattling and vibration and generally looks a good...

    Combination Squares

I really don't have deep enough pockets for this topic at all, I don't even own a cheap combi square. This is everything I've gathered that could be considered a measuring or marking tool of some kind, I try to rely on a full size drawing to transfer sizes from or a story stick as much as...

    re-freshing an abused wooden plane

I would imagine that £15+ would have been the price point, it was a gift second-hand so I had no idea that they were manufactured so cheaply, it's a bulky solid blade and cap iron that keeps a keen edge (but is a pain in the backside to grind because it's so much material). I'm not sure the...

    re-freshing an abused wooden plane

So after a few minutes of sanding at 180 grit we've got a flat surface. A quick spray with 3 in 1 is my standard lazy finish for stuff that's in the workshop, I need to make up some beeswax polish as I'm almost out but this'll do fine for now. I decided not to go right down past the most...

    re-freshing an abused wooden plane

My most used tool is probably a "workzone" plane I was gifted for free by a friend who had no luck with it, it's spent time in a shed and has some discolouration, the handle has fallen off and been glued back in place squint but I've really been hard on this thing and it's been an excellent...

Post a photo of the last thing you made

https://imgur.com/a/YrARp15 Linking to imgur so I don't have to bother cropping or converting files, really quite happy with this bench, It started last year but got sidelined when I needed to move my workshop so glad to finally have the thing finished and in time for good weather as well...

Going to try and make an infill plane

Got myself an old herring blade for this contraption, it's very heavy and much thicker than I expected which looks great so far, anyway that's the start of this process underway now I can get things going this weekend.
