    Brace and Ledge Door

Thanks for the sketch Coley. I see what you are saying now. I have it in my head that the brace should be between 45 and 60 degrees. I made the doors today and as they are quite narrow shed doors I have two braces at around 50 degrees. :)

    Brace and Ledge Door

Hi Coley, I am not so sure I follow exactly what you are saying. Any chance of a picture? Thanks

    Brace and Ledge Door

Hi all, Does anyone know if there are specific angles that should be used for the notch in the Ledge that receives the Brace end? One book suggests (see diagram below) that the width of the measurement 'W/5' is a fifth of the Brace width (W). Unfortunately the text is blurred and I can't...

    Shed/Greenhouse

Hi sunnybob, I am not sure how much it is costing. No more than a cheap greenhouse hopefully  (The cheapest aluminum greenhouse I have seen in Ireland is around €400). I have the windows and the bricks already so its makes good use of them. It might go against logic but now the idea is...

    Shed/Greenhouse

Mike, as the wall is single skin how effective will the straps be regarding lateral wind pressures (I live by the coast)? Maybe I am worrying and over thinking this but am I right in thinking that the straps on the windward side of the structure prevent uplift but not inward lateral movement of...

    Shed/Greenhouse

Good point AJB, An aluminium greenhouse would have merit. I will do a bit of a search for prices here in Ireland and see if it is a possibility. One concern though would be strength against the coastal winds. I might have to add some extra beef to the frame anyhow. ...... And what do I do...

    Shed/Greenhouse

Thanks again Mike. The straps do seem the way to go and thanks for clarifying the roof and lintels. Forgive me for not quite grasping here but there are two points in your reply that I don't quite grasp: What do you mean by "the wrong side"? I apologise for the very simplified non-scale...

    Shed/Greenhouse

HI Mike. Thanks so much for replying to my post. What would the max unsupported span of the 2x2 purlins be? If they run the length of the structure (3m) then putting in x3 rafters (4x2) would put the unsupported purlin span at 1.5m (and the rafter span at almost 2m). Do you think the roof...

    Shed/Greenhouse

Hi. Its not exactly a workshop that am building but a small Greenhouse/shed. (This seemed the most appropriate sub-forum to post in). It won't be the most glamorous construction. I just want the space to store some pots, grow tomatoes and propagate things. The general plan is: Footprint -...

New England Style saltbox roof shed (Lots of WIP Piccies)

HI Roger, I am just curious as to how the windows were fitted to achieve water tightness where they butt up against the cladding. I am planning on building a a greenhouse/shed (not going to be as pro as yours  ) and am trying to gather as much insight as possible. My construction will...

    Concrete control joints?

Thanks again for the replies. Very helpful. :) Yes, I am understanding. It does probably sound like I am asking some obvious questions. I can get a bit caught up on the details, I just want to be well prepared. I am definitely going to give it a go and unfortunately don't know anyone with...

    Concrete control joints?

Thanks once again for all the replies :) 3m x 3m Thanks Lons, that's reassuring. I will definitely have all the prep done before I get mixing. Have been digging out the last couple of days and so glad that it has rained a bit to soften the ground. Thanks again John15, I plan to cover the...

    Concrete control joints?

Hi John, Thanks for the reply. Very helpful. As I am hiring the mixer I would like to do all the concreting over the weekend. Therefore I would only be able to wait 'overnight' if I do alternate bays. Do you think that a day would be long enough before taking out the intermediate formwork...

    Concrete control joints?

Hi, I am going to create a concrete slab for an open workspace outside the shed: 3m sq. 100mm Concrete 100mm Sub Base. I will hire a mixer for the weekend and will have someone helping me. I am also going to do a path 13m x 0.5m I am getting a bit mixed up regarding what material is...

    Drawbore Rules and Standards?

They are not the neatest joints  and I do have limited clamps ....... and I really really want to drawbore them all...... a bit 'belt and braces' maybe. I made a couple of things for the hall (a bench and a shelf unit) using drawbore and now want to explore it further. I did enjoy...

    Drawbore Rules and Standards?

Thanks everyone for your replies. I have been a little slow replying as its been a bit crazy since the storm.. no electric for a few days...now just flakey internet..... Siince my original post I have been reading what Charles Hayward has to say.... He says that the hole 'should be within 1/4"...
