    Coloured pencil bowl

Not my sort of I'm afraid though that's only me  so just ignore that bit...... :D I just wanted to say, what a fantastic demonstration of grain direction in a cross-grain bowl! It took me quite a while to get my head around it but had I seen this early on....well.....it couldn;t have...

    Midlands turning help.

If you can get yourself to Pershore you could do a lot worse than booking yourself a day with Mark Hancock (www.markhancock.co.uk/). Pretty much guarantee you wouldn't be disappointed. I've been to see him a couple of times from well north of you and found it invaluable.

How to achieve Top RPM on Union Gradute a Lathe?

Hmmm, mine has 4 pulleys top and bottom so you simply match the pulleys. The standard spec is 4 pulleys (see here http://www.woodturninglathes.co.uk/Headstock.html). Are you sure there's only three?

    Delta Wood Lathe 46-255 Help

I suspect it's essentially the same as this http://www.fox-machines.com/en/fox-mach ... f=48&p=233 I'm sure if you give them a call they can confirm either way.

    Union Grad question...

Hi, I've got a Graduate short-bed. I've been given a sanding attachment for the outboard side which consists of a 14" aluminium faceplate and a cowl.....looks like the standard sort of arrangement. I fitted the faceplate and all seemed ok. However, when I stop the lathe the faceplate...

    Talking about lucky boys.....

Someone told me if you wet the wood the grain stands up and you get a better finish........was I doing it wrong? #-o

    Some pots.....

Thanks folks. TTK, everyone needs a wine bottle coaster! Or two..... (the rule is they must be kept ion constant use or they will degrade......)

    Talking about lucky boys.....

Hi Paul, suspect you're right. It was the wrong tool for for what I was trying to do as well. The edge scraper worked much better. A lesson well learned. Suspect you're right about the possibility / probability of fatigue / fault and as ROB points out in succinct fashion, my eyes are worth...

    Talking about lucky boys.....

Whilst absolutely acknowledging that this is nothing compared to Babylon355's nasty accident.... I was leaning over the lathe trying to smooth the inside of a vessel, peering inside as I turned. I was using a 13mm round scraper. Got a catch, tool pivoted on the toolrest, end of the handle...

    Some pots.....

Still really enjoying this lark....Finding some real challenges dealing with rotten wood and the insides of various shaped vessels. Also managed to bend a 13mm round scraper....but that's another story.... Pretty sure this is a piece of cherry. It was a rough looking piece of limb with about...

    Wood ID

Hi, maybe asking a lot, but any gurus here able to identify these lumps from the bark? Certainly nothing fancy.....no other pics at the moment, could take others if they'd help.

    First lathe

Hi Matmac, I've got the Clarke equivalent, I was fortunate to be given it by someone who had it in the back of their barn unused for many years. I've only just started turning and was initially very dubious about the lathe.....I had all kinds of plans to replace it very quickly. But having...

    Moving on....

Thanks for the thoughts..... The wood is all from trees on our land around the house. It's pretty much all native broadleaf, no ornamentals or fancy foreign stuff ;-) I didn't think there was any elm but would be very happy to be wrong! These, and a great pile more, where all trimmings that...

    Moving on....

Hi all, well, I got over the disappointment of going straight through the bottom of the little oak bowl and thought it best to 'jump straight back on the horse'! We've got all sorts of lumps of wood lying around from various tree-trimmings that have been done over the years with most of the...

    Newbie - New question.....

Hmmm, like the idea of plugging it.....that will test my skills! Calipers, yes, fingers will have to for now but a proper pair will go to the top of the ever-extending-and-already-extremely-long-wanted/needed list.... I actually do have such a list detailing all the bits I want/need. When I...

    Newbie - New question.....

Well, given the excellent advice on my last query I bashed out another oak bowl from a piece of scrap I had lying around. A combination of careful toolwork and the application of my new Crown Side Cut Scraper gave me quite a nice finish with very little end grain problems....not perfect, I know...

    Newbie - Finishing query

Thanks for all the advice folks, really appreciate it. Tried the sharp tools/gentle scrape method on another oak bowl and it (of course) worked a charm. Great resource this, look forward to more chats.

    Newbie - Finishing query

Hi all, newbie here :D Just started turning and as usual, addicted etc. I was lucky enough to be given (on long term loan) a basic Clarke lathe which is good enough to get me started. Treated myself to some Sorby tolls and a Record bench grinder....only thing I've obviously got wrong so far...
