    Veritas dowel maker

I once watched Harry Bryant, boat builder extraordinaire, make dowels by drilling a hole of the correct size in a plank and making a slight counter-sink in the hole. He then took an offcut that was about 1" square and 3 feet long, and used a spoke shave to take it down to an octagon-ish shape...

    How make a stopped dado?

Andy et al, You're spot on. I meant a rebate or rabbet. Thank you very much for clearing that up. Yeah, I'm a colonist (though a reformed one, having sworn allegiance to Her Majesty). Admittedly this probably isn't the best way to install the back, but I'm new to woodworking and I'm doing...

    How make a stopped dado?

I'm building a bookcase and I want to put in a dado so I can lay the backing in flush to the back of the case. Since I'll need a dado, but don't want it to go clear through to each end of the planks, what's the best way to make a dado that has stopped ends, particularly with hand tools?

    Maroon Stanley?

Thanks, guys. I paid $30 for it at an estate sale. I'll clean it up and see how it goes. I tried using the plane dating decision tree but was getting 1933 - 1941, which I knew couldn't be right. I still haven't found any pics of Stanley planes that are maroon/purple, so that didn't help me...

    Wet Wet Wet!

Here in New England we had a humid summer. About the middle of August I gave up trying to close any drawers or doors; it was just pointless. I'd get a drawer shut and then couldn't open it again without risking spilling all the contents when it finally gave way. They're all just coming back...

    Maroon Stanley?

I'm hoping the assembled expertise on the board might be able to help me figure out if this Stanley plane is of an era that makes it worth keeping. I can't find anything to give me an idea of how old it is or even what model it is.
