Another one of those cost questions

Disregarding apples !!! I think the answer for hobby turners to price things is something along the lines of : £4 per blank (say) £1 miscellaneous (as per bellringer) £8 an hour labour at about minimum wage . Or £500 per hour at Accountant level ! So time per bowl plus £5 each multiplied by...

    Yew hollow form.

To my eye it looks better without the foot, and I think you are right about the new finial being a bit too long. I really like the character of anything featuring splits, knots, etc, even though others see flaws instead. You have made a super job of it, is it difficult to "keep the crack", I'm a...

Latest effort from the donated Walnut logs

I love the knot, it is that kind of feature I really like. I am yet to try my first bowl, my first sack of blanks is on its way, but my view of your lines is that they distract rather than add to the natural beauty, I am thinking to add lines on plain wood as opposed to feature wood. this is...

    mt2 too long

Hi, I have a Fox mini lathe with mt2 tapers at head and tailstock. I also have several drill type chucks from Proops but the actual taper is too long at the headstock end. At the tailstock winding out the quill solves it. Can I simply hacksaw off a bit for the headstock end, and if so is it soft...

    Demo Day

Hi all, just a note as a beginner to say thanks to everyone at Axminster in Warrington for a really good day. The staff were really helpful, and the members of several North West clubs were brilliant at answering many novice questions as well some lovely demonstrating. Thanks to all involved! Terry

    drill type chucks.

Thanks everyone, a combination of all the above is required ! At least until I get a pillar drill. I keep nepenthes carnivorous plants, and now I know what the fly thinks !! It's a slippery slope !! Regards Terry

    drill type chucks.

Hi, I'm a beginner having just purchased a lovely fox mini/midi lathe. I have just bought 3 chucks from Proops, 2 of them the required mt2 taper. When I tap out the prong, and replace with the chuck on the taper, it doesn't want to stay in with the lathe running. I guess I'm doing something...

    Marksmen turning chisels

Thanks very much everyone for all the advice, I have gone for the Axminster set at £71.50. It seems to be a really good middle of the road choice, and most people have positive things to say about Axminster. Just need some wood now ! Regards Terry

    Marksmen turning chisels

Am about to get my first lathe, and am on a tight budget. I am looking at a cheap set of chisels while I learn the ropes, and have seen a Marksmen set of six for £50. They all look to be the right size and type for me although the skew chisel is only 1/2". I appreciate that they are not 1st...
